I just noticed that your idle is only around 400rpm. It is true that if the CTS is telling the ECU it is colder than it really is, the fuel mixture will be richer and the idle speed would indeed be higher. Sorry I missed that.  :-[

I still suspect a sensor or possibly a faulty multi-ram. Have you checked all the connections on the latter? Someone on here was having all sorts of problems with his car recently and traced the fault to one of the rams not being connected properly. Go round all of them to make sure they are fully seated and that the jubilee clips are tight.

ALL the multi rams work fine, everything connected as it should.

I just replaced 1 of the ram solenoids that I bought off Marky Mark which was off a 2.5 elite - surely they are the same?

cheers all. where is sensor? how much is it, non tc <dont have one>. and part number please. might as well change it to eliminate it! is it a hard job to change it?

cheers steve

Don't have the part number, but it's located on top at the back of the engine. You'll need to have the plenum off at the very least (think I also removed the injector assembly as well) just to get access. All very straightforward, but remember to get new seals for the plenum and injector assembly. The actual sensor is not too dear IIRC.

I would have thought so, but can't be 100% sure.

Is the smell of fuel most prominent at the back or front of the car? If it's the back, check around the filter again but more importantly, check the pump area as corrosion is a recently discovered problem. There's a thread on here somewhere (I'll try and dig it out for you) but you need to check under the carpet in the boot. It'll make sense when I find the thread. Give me 15 mins.  :y

Thanks for that, it's defo unburnt fuel and not stale, you can smell it in the car and behind (much stronger) from the exhaust.

Don't have the part number, but it's located on top at the back of the engine.....

Earlier cars use 90510183 Socket on top has squared off corners.

Later cars use   90541520 my car is a T reg 99 and has the this one. Socket is deeper than above & is overall a rectangle but has rounded off corners.

In that case, IMHO, your looking at a sensor problem, or possibly an ECU problem.

IE the superchip? Like I said I tried the standard chip and it didn't do anything except turn the engine, no signs of life....

First thing I would be doing is a vac test with a good old fashioned vac gauge....this will give an indication of the mechanical state of the engine, any slight miss fires and if there are any vac leaks.

I strongly suspect the lack of cats screwing up the lambda values as teh route cause.......

***UPDATE***

No spark on NO1 - changed the plug, lead, everything connected properly.  :(

The dispack is genuine bosch and can only be less than 1-2k old - looks like I need to change this though.
Funny thing is, the plug looks brand new still!

OH today is not a good day :(

As you can see in the top pic farthest to the left, looks burnt to me?

I do have a dispack that has a different connector, if I mod this will it work ok? (very very skint!)

The one above ends in 7 and the other one I have ends in 0 (off a vectra iirc). I do have a spare loom I could mod to fit the plug.

Right I modded the Vectra dis to take my plug.... WOW!

I plan on using it for a while before I buy a brand new one with the correct fitting to see if its just the dis that died or if its something more sinister.

I'm not sure on fuel consumption yet though and it's still idling @ 400 RPM. I'll report back later when I have a better idea.

Many thanks to everyone for the big input on this!  :y
