Problem at work - possible Disciplinary
« on: 25 September 2007, 22:20:58 »

As if I needed this right now.

Got taken aside by my team leader tonight, he told me that Internal Systems have complained that last night I used the network in an inappropriate way.

Basically a work mate sent me some links to his own site, one of which was a (harmless) zip file, which Scansafe wouldn't let me access. All totally legit and harmless.

Now I gather human resources have instructed Internal Sys to look through ALL my browsing history and emails to make sure I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be.

Joy.

I know exactly what the policies are - and I've not breached any of them.

personal use is allowed as long as it's clean and legal and not likely to harm systems,

they seem to think I was trying to download a key logger - which is just not true!!

I keep mine well trimmed back - but then I tend to stick to about 8 sites at work and 3 of them are IT related, plus here, Ebay, BBC News, and a couple of others.

So couple of times a day the office gets the headlines!!

As to leaving trails - I leave none

Then you will be fine, do they know about your Police aspirations, if so do they really think that you would do something illegal if you wanted to uphold the law.

I have put a huge amount of time and dedication into my department, (and company) at times of need, and I've always acted honestly and diligently.

I can't do anymore - if that isn't believed, then maybe I'm working in the wrong place...

You are mature beyond your years James, I think they know it, I am  pretty sure you will be OK.

How big is the company (how many employees)?

500+ at a guess...

I was an IT officer for the NHS for over 5 years before I came here... so I'm no stranger to IT policies.

Most of the time firewall and similiar software logging databases are not arranged to hold long history data..

if the company you are working is a crowded one also filtering your requests are troublesome..

And most network engineers dont understand sql queries ..

And I think someone catch you either by the help of a scanserver or from the network load at late time..

hope this relaxes a bit..

ooops 500+... :) really they need to work hard..

PS: Some companies like to use group policies on the domain + pc controlling softwares..These are installed automatically when you logon..Check those also..

Company that size is likely to have a proxy server (ISA or similar), which does log history.

Ultimately it is all down to the Acceptable Use Policy or any other IT policy in place.

If personal use is allowed at all times (some limit it to lunch breaks etc) , it will usually be defined as 'reasonable use', in which case you will have to demonstrate that what you did was 'reasonable'.

And I suspect the link your friend sent you was to a 'dodgy' site which triggered the alarm at your Systems department.

Sorry I can't help more....

We are an ISP, for which I am a technical engineer, so I know exactly how the systems are set up and how/what is logged ;)

I think nothing will come of it....  storm in a teacup...

ISP's have different priorities than long time logging self workers internet usage data on big disk arrays !

Here also we have huge capacity disk arrays but as an experience web sense we are using is configured as 100 MB database thats cleaned up nearly every week !!
