misfire/petrol leak
« on: 09 September 2007, 15:03:14 »

Hi there,
First of all what a helpful site, perhaps you experts can give me a bit of advice.
w reg  2.5 v6 auto saloon, recently done the cam cover gaskets,as the plug wells were quite oily.
Noticed a petrol smell from the back end , took the circular cover off in the boot and there seemed to be a small amount of petrol leaking out from under the large black cover ( I had just filled the tank) .So I siphoned about 8 gallons out, which seemed to stop the leak.Decided to just keep an eye on things till I had time for further investigation, but then last week the car developed a misfire.I have read on here that oil in the wells can cause plug leads to fail due to heat build up, but before I go down that road, does anyone think the petrol leak could be anything to do with it.The plugs were changed 3000 miles back and a new dis pack about he same time.

Are you sure that it was leaking from the cover to the tank or from one of the
2 pipes coming out of the cover?

Remove cover again, switch on ignition to get the pump to run, no need to start
the engine, and check again.

When you had the plugs and dispack changed, were the leads changed as well?

Did you clean out the breathers, which if blocked are the major cause of the cam gaskets
failing and soaking the plugs and leads in oil?

If not, they may have failed again.

Grumpy'a done an excellent 'How To' http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1186065848  See if that helps with the petrol leak/smell:y

Hi Grumpy,
Thanks for the reply,The petrol was definitely leaking from under the cover, the top and pipes were quite dry. Regarding the plug leads, they were not replaced at the time, take your point about the breather, will clean it out. Do you think its possibly the leads?

If the plug leads were sitting in a pool of hot oil, then they've been
'Fried' and will go very nicely with a piece of battered cod.  :)
They won't be fit for much else.  :(

Check again to see if you have oil on the plugs.
If so clean the breather system before re-sealing the cam covers.

Loads of info on this on this forum, and gazillions of chaps who
have sorted this on the V6's and will be happy to talk you through a
do it yourself.

You really need to do this yourself, as it's the only way to know
that it's been done correctly.

For your Fuel leak, check that the large black locking ring is tight
and not been put on cross-threaded.
If ok, remove the cover and change the seal between the
Pump cover plate and the fuel tank.
