is it really necessary to take the hose at the heater matrix off cant you just flush the flipping thing out like NORMAL cars :)

It's always best to flush the matrix out direct as its another rad and so will flush alot better directly.

...but if you do a few (e.g. 2-3) flushes while allowing the engine to warm-up and ensuring that the heater / climate are on full heat, then you should get to all corners of the cooling system....
