Tractor coolant leak

Driving around at lunchtime, and coming home from work, I thought the tractor was using a little more coolant than normal (usually only have to fill it every couple of days), I seemed to be getting the Coolant Level warning a bit too frequent. So over the dat, I had probably put in about 5l.

Driving home, the coolant warning came on within a few miles, and temp began to rise a little.  So I stopped and opened the bonnet.  Didn't take long to find a leak (actually 2) - high pressure jets from the top hose. Bugger.  Got it home with the cap off.

I'm guessing the overpressurising problem as possibly caused the hose to fail?


Looks like it'll be parked up until I can change the head  :'(

Could that not have happened due to it being on and off a fair bit recently it may have been stressed a bit too much

I had a look around smithys today not much in there unless you want vectra bits they have a 2.0l gls estate n reg but not much on it and bonnet wouldnt open

Possible, but there was an awful lot of pressure....

Thinking about it, at lunchtime, the performance seemed to drop a bit...  ...wonder if crack got worse  :-/

I've got a mate who swears by it and it usually does work - been waiting a few years to have a good laugh at him.

I have heard some bad reports about that sort of stuff Rad Weld etc.... clogging up the veins of the radiator :-?

I agree too... This stuff works slightly different, same idea though.

The last car he used it on while I was there was a Rover or Volvo. He took a plug out when it had warmed up poured it in ran it for x amount of time, knocked it off put the plug back in and it ran sweet.

The head on this is buggered anyways, so....

Don't do it!!

The likes of K seal, etc, is for cowboys, devils work...

I still recon it's HG on yours, and not a cracked head. Only a personal suspicion.

I've said it before, and I stand by my words - that ain't a HG.  Convinced its a cracked head.  What I can prove is that coolant is getting in to precombustion chamber...

I've said it before, and I stand by my words - that ain't a HG.  Convinced its a cracked head.  What I can prove is that coolant is getting in to precombustion chamber...

And as I've said before - we're gonna have to pull the thing off before you can tell :y

Have you got everything you need to start stripping it?

Have you got everything you need to start stripping it?

Nope, need HG, exhaust manifold gasket, possibly head bolts (presumably stretch bolts?), and a locking kit.

Personally I would never trust these "instant fixes", especially given the pressures generated inside a diesel cylinder, they might work on a low compression petrol engine .. but in a high compresion diesel ?? I'd be very worried .. :(

I am suitably underwhelmed by Holts stuff...   ...some of the trade flushes/additives/etc that a certain other member has got me before though has done what it says on the tin...

Come tb, get that head off and sort this tractor once and for all. you know what the problem is and you putting it off, which to a degree i understand, but that crack is gonna go big time and it will prob go when your a fair way from your home and pelting down with rain.  All the best
