Door Strap Repair
« on: 19 September 2007, 22:23:40 »

Tomorrow I'm going to repair the ripped out door strap tear on my drivers door (got the plates/repair kit from VX) but the door has no strap mechanism but I have a spare which I removed from a passenger side door, on the door strap there is an R on one side and a L on the other, is it the same part for both sides, can I use the part from the passenger side door to repair the drivers door by turning it upside down.
Cheers Jim

A front strap does either L or R at the front only.  Does not fit the rear.

and vice versa, rear cannot fit on the front.

As I recall, it cannot simply be turned upside down as there is a clearance issue wthin the door itself.  You need to turn the check strap only, leaving the plate with figure 8 spring, roller etc the same way up.

The stamped R or L goes uppermost and can be swapped from side to side by simply placing the figure of 8 spring portion in a vice, using a lever (screwdriver?) to remove the tension in the spring affair then turn the check strap rod the other way up.

If you are stuck, I have a spare in the garage and will take a few piccys in the morning showing what I mean.   :y

Pretty sure they're the same both sides so you can just turn em upside down, you probably have to take the check strap out of the mechanism and rotate that, but it's really easy to do with it removed from the door.

Theres nothing fancy in the kit, other than a couple of mild steel plates and slightly lengthened screws.  After seeing it, its probably something that could be knocked up with in most garages and save a few squids....

Jim - you fancy measuring the sizes of the plates including holes before you fit them and posting them up?

You got a pair of size nines on the end of your legs?  Need one screwdriver in one portion, held down with your boot, lever in the other portion, pull up with one hand to releive tension, use the other to turn the strap., then relax...

They teach you what kind of fieldcraft these days?  What happened to improvise, adapt, overcome??   ;D
