Oil leak
« on: 03 October 2007, 11:17:08 »

I have noticed I appear to have an oil leak from the engine its not too bad but there is a leak  :( the leaked oil is collecting on the ledge at the bottom of the engine where the sump is bolted on . there are no obvious leaks the rocker covers do not look like they are leaking . I have not taken any spark plugs out yet to see if thers any oil in there . Any suggestions /pointers to look for  :y

Oil pressure sensor has been known to leak IIRC. Front driver's side of the engine.

I'd have a peek inside the cam belt cover to ensure the belt is dry and to see if you can see any leakage from the camshaft oil seals. Have a look under the spark plug lead rubbers to ensure you don't have any oil in there from rocker cover gaskets.

Have a look around the oil filter and cooler pipe unions just in case they're leaking.

It's worth checking the breathers are clear in any instance of oil leakage if they haven't been cleaned recently.

Failing that clean up the engine with some paraffin or similar and keep an eye on where it re-emerges.

Hi,

I had this on mine. Looknee came down mine and we had a look all over and it turned out to be the rocker gaskets. If they leak at the back you wont see it and it will drip down and eventually smother that ledge. Do you get an oil smell coming through your blowers? , if so it will be the oil on the manifolds.

Looks like a job for the weekend then the leak must be from the front somewhere as the oil is visable along the front edge under the belts. I cleaned it off on Sunday and it has returned but not as  bad  :-/

Thats what i thought mate and i spent nearly a week wiping and chasing oil leaks. It did turn out to be the rocker gaskets. Dont forget , when your driving and oil is dripping it can drip to anywhere due to vibration.

Up to you where you look , just thought it might save you a week of scratching heads like me!

If you need to change the crank seal, the bottom pulley is a KNIGHTMARE to get off, as the bolt is done up to about 320nm.

I have a special tool that makes the job easy - Sassanach made it for me.

If you need to borrow - no worries :y

funnily enough that's about the same torque that my wheel bolts were done up to by the place that changed my tyres last time.. >:( >:(
