MV6 3 litre advice
« on: 01 October 2007, 21:18:20 »

Hi ya all

I`ve seen a MV6 localish to me with about 68k with history to 52k plus old mot`s.

maintained regardless only little niggle it`s used a pint of coolant over 9 months is this the nor.

but the cambelt hasn`t been done yet the owners said apparantly it`s 80k is this right or should i get it done straight away if i buy.

nearly forgot how much is the cambelt kit for the MV6 it`s a 1999 and roughly how long to do trying to gauge garage labour costs.

nearlt forgot something else is 1200 a good price
cheers.

cambelt is 40k/4yrs. No exception, whatever they show you. Was 80k/8yrs, but reduced after failures.

As to price, if a 53 plate, brilliant price, if an M plate ex-plod, not a good price ;)

Belts & Rollers/tensioners should be changed every 40 000 miles or 4 years, full kit is about £100 on TC, garage supply & fit is anything from £230 upwards, but not that difficult if you are good with tools & stuff  :y

If the cam belt was not done at 40K it needs doing immediately. The original advice was to change at 80k but this was revised by Vauxhall due to a lot of early failures! This is a good bargaining point, however. It's an expensive job at a main dealer (300-400 quid) but about 100 quid parts to do yourself. There's a DVD available from RobinHood on here which details to procedure. Either way, I'd change it if you buy the car for peace of mind. It's only got another 12k to go at best.

Coolant leaks are frequently the heater bypass valve which sits behind the driver's side of the engine so have a look for any evidence of leakage here. The oil cooler cover has also been known to give leaks and this sits in the "vee" of the engine.

These are both a bit of a pain to get to but not expensive problems to fix. Head gaskets and other serious issues are rare on this engine.

Agree with everything above and on a T plate thats a darn good price, buyer beware though, no harm in viewing and checking it over  :)
