Panel Filters!  Green?  Pipercross?  K&N?

Which are the best? I heard the Green Filters were better due to being cotton, Although I just found out there is a 3 week waiting list for them, cant decide wether to wait for it or order a Pipercross or K&N? (Could be a waiting list for them for all I know though)

Any advice or oppinions are welcome!!

Hi,

I tried panel filters and vauxhalls own and found absolutely no difference in noise or performance.

The noise they make is very addictive and sound lovely. It is very quiet until you floor it and then it sucks like a prozzy on piece work!

Best of both worlds, quiet if you drive normal and F1 soundtrack if you dont!

Only cost a tenner too!

Stick with VX own, there the best by far. Lighter on the wallet too.

Only reason for changing would be if "noise" was crucial to you.. :-/

I doubt there'd be any improvement in performance with any of them. Unlikely to affect noise as the standard airbox is retained. I thought K&Ns were cotton elements too?

The slight advantage is that these filters are re-useable by cleaning but they require regular cleaning and oiling to maintain efficient filtration whereas the OEM filters you just bin after 20,000 miles and fit a new one. You're unlikely to make your money back any time soon through re-use, however!

On the downside, oiled filters can contaminate the MAF sensor.

I can't really see the point, TBH.

Removing the airbox and fitting a cone filter will get you noise but lose you power due to the fact that they draw in hot air from the engine bay.

.. as an aside, a rolling road day, as is being mooted, would be an ideal opportunity to test some of these items back-to-back to end the speculation.

It doesnt actually with the one i got (one in the pic) , as its a funnel filter so all you need to do is route the pipe from the front grill to sit insde the end of the funnel filter. Then only cold air enters the filter and it gives you the power increase due to better breathing and the noise as the air spins insie the filter.

My partner noticed the gain as soon as she drove it (and she knows absolutely nothing about cars)

Yeah sounds a good idea. Personally i think its more torque than outright power , but saying that it does seem to pick up alot quicker at 130mph on a private road.

There is a difference , honestly , i wouldnt say so if not.

Personally i wouldnt bother with a panel as you are limited by the airbox

Ahh, OK. If you have a sealed duct around the filter leading to a place of coldness that's fine.   Cooler air is far better than having a little restriction.

My argument is that the original panel filter would have been designed with a fair margin of area in reserve to allow for contamination during the long service life so I'd be surprised if a significant improvement would result over a standard filter regularly changed.

But people sell plastic "superchargers" that are no more than hair dryers that bolt onto your car, all manner of additives and potions, magnets that you put in your tank to save fuel, etc. If people can be convinced to buy them, they'll sell them.

Yeah, i spent money on 3 different panel filters and was disapointed everytime. I cant believe something that has the name "maxpower" attatched to it and only costs £9.99 can be so good.
Just goes to show , that price doesnt neccesarily mean performance.

Too true!! Some people will buy anything!!

How easy is this to fit? hose sizes etc. Dont usually trust things that cost so little and Motorworld aint really the most specialised shop!!

No offense intended by the way!! I'm sure it sounds great!! Some pics would be cool of the kit u have and any others people are using!!

Hi,

Very easy to fit. It took me literally 1 minute to remove the airbox and 2 minutes to fit the airfilter. The most time consuming part was routing the pipe from the grill round to go into the end of the funnel filter and stay there. Took about 20 mins or so.

Sounds lovely.
