Key Fob Remote Range ?
« on: 08 October 2007, 20:23:52 »

just a quick check here.

The range of my key fob remote was rubbish and somtime never worked even thought the light would come on on it so i thought it was a dead or low battery so i changed it and its about the same. i am lucky if it works 4 meters away.

whats everyone else's range ?

Think mine works from about 4-5 metres (16-20 feet in old money ;D) but if I put it to my forehead and look at my car then press the button it works even further away, honest try it ;)

Similarly poor, though slightly better/more reliable since having the thing fully apart, just this evening, to clean up the rather corroded copper battery contact.  I think the main limitation is that it's line-of-sight to the IR receiver, and the strength of beam given off by the emitter in the keyfob, which has to be limited for decent battery longevity.  I bet they make more efficient IR LEDs today if you're handy with a soldering iron, but hardly worth the bother I'd say.

How far do you really want to be from it when you lock/unlock your car? If you're too far away the interior light would have gone back off before you got to it. ;)

A colleague of mine used to have an S type and the range of his remote was silly. One day he noticed his boot had been open in the pi$$ing rain because it went off in his pocket about 30 metres away in the office!  ;D

My '94 Elite would only work when right up against the window, even with a new battery. My '00 CD is about 5 metres.
A colleague has a Citroen that works at about 30 meters too. What on earth d'ya need that sort of range ?  By the time you get to the car some toerag will have nicked the stereo.

My Almera has an aftermarket Cat 1 alarm - quite often I'm working upstairs, a good 20m away, and if I lean on the fob it unlocks. Only find out when I go outside four hours later...

Is the key fob the RF type or the IR type with the red pimple on the ceiling.

I found mine was playing up so I took the back off and pushed the board in as it was loose.

Now mine works without any issues can be standing about 10m and it will lock/unlock might be worth a look

HTH :)

My dads car has the IR type and can hold the remote at best about a meter away.

My keyfob had a crap range, changed the battery and its a bit better now, can lock or open the car from about 10 metres away, but still not as good as more modern cars unfortunately  >:(
