When I had the Head Gasket changed on my Vectra (X20XEV) engine, the mechanic left the manifold attached to the head and unbolted the downpipes, was far simpler than removing the manifold from the block.

Maybe that's why it looks as if th manifold hadn't been disturbed on yours?

That is the way i usually take the heads off but you still have to take off the manifold when you get the head skimmed, if it needs it, as the surfacing machine will not take the complete unit. ;)

Yeh, the head wasn't skimmed because the Hg was just split and allowing oil out, the waterways weren't affected and the head was still true.

It's now 20K further on and leak free.

As far as I recall from when I last removed the cyl head on my veccy X20XEV, you have to remove the exhaust manifold as it straddles part of the engine block.  To leave it on the head and then refit would cause potential problems with the exhaust manifold gasket later on.

Hairline cracks are common and they can develop quickly into a large crack depending on how hot you run your motor.  You will find many will have hairline cracks as does mine, I thknk you were just unlucky it got worse on yours.

Good luck! :y

To make sourcing easier....here is a list of the cars and engines which the part is used on (its pretty dam common!)

Calibra 1989-97 X20XEV engine.

Cavalier 3 1989-1995 X20XEV engine.

Vectra B 1996-01 X18XE engine with chassis number from W1000001 or from W500001 up to W5276825 or from W7000001 or from XL000001 and X20XEV engine with chassis number W1000001 up to W199999 or from W5000001 up to W5276825 or from W7000001 up to W7999999.

Omega B 1994-03 X20XEV engine.

Frontera A 1992-98 X22XE engine with chassis number up to TV899999.

Sintra 1997-99 X22XE engine with chassis number up to 31031836.

Just a quick question, i too have a crack in the exaust manifold (Doc says it will clear up with some cream ;D ;D), will a 2.0 manifold fit a 2.2?

The car chassis number is WOLOVBM35Y1131721.

i was going to weld the crack but if i can get a replacement cheaply then i will not bother. :)

At the risk of 'teaching Granny to suck eggs'  :-? if you do make sure you get the rest of the manifold nice & hot first or it'll tend to crack nicely along side your weld.

i usually take the manifold off, put into a potters oven to get really warm. Use a very high carbon welding stick and then over the next 24 hours, after putting back into the oven, let the manifold cool down with the oven. No new cracks found on any of my repairs but i know what you mean Andy B. :)

Rather than all this paff i would sooner just change the manifold if a straight swap was possible, my question still stands. :)

There are two types of manifolds for X20XEV engine : One http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-VECTRA-CALIBRA-OMEGA-X20XEV_W0QQitemZ330144173741QQihZ014QQcategoryZ10404QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
with holes for air fan pipe (most Omegas) and second http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-24420438-VECTRA-ASTRA-X20XEV_W0QQitemZ330153747215QQihZ014QQcategoryZ10404QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
without it (like at my Vectra 99)
Is it OK if I will replace the one with holes with the one without them? I will have to get rid of the pump, but I don't know if it's OK for the engine and what was changed in last X20XEV engines that GM decided not to install the air pump. I know that this pump is to supply more air when the engine is cold to allow the rest of fumes to burn  and this way it protects the catalytic converter.
So was there anything changed in engines without the fan and is it completely ok for the engine to install new manifold without holes?

How do you protect the bolts from wrenching off the bolts when unscrewing, as they tend to crack and small piece is left in the engine head... I was advised to use a rust remover but I don't have any good one.
I can buy new manifold for [ch321]85 but I'm afraid that this might be a cheap no-branded one that will crack after a year... Can you please advise where I can buy a good quality manifold?
