Aaarrrggghh!! Oil filter disaster on 2.6
« on: 17 October 2007, 12:41:50 »

To say I was pi55ed off would be an understatement.

Went out this morning to do a "quick" oil and filter change on my 2.6 V6. I've only had the car a few weeks so this was the first time I'd done it on this one. I've changed the oil several times on the 2.5 so I didnt expect any problems. All was going well until I tried to get the filter housing off. Now these things are only supposed to be torqued to wither 15 or 25 Nm - depending on whather you believe the can itself or the TIS. However this one is rock solid.

There isnt much room for leverage with a ratchet but even so that didnt budge it. I finally got a breaker bar onto it but it still wont move and to make matters worse the oil filter housing has now split with the force I have applied and oil is pi55ing out everywhere... but still it wont come off! >:(

Any suggestions??

Is this the paper element type which you take the lid off to get too?

28 rings a bell but not 100%. JamesV6 said that his had a square cut into the hex so a 3/8 ratchet would slot directly on.

I think you can take off the whole housing off which is what it sounds like you are going to have to do and fit a complete new part. MDTM has had to do this on one of his cars so he should be able to advise you better!

Ive been using a 3/8 ratchet in the sqaure hole to try to get this cover off but I think that's what caused it to crack. Think I'll need the proper socket to get it off.

Yep, a 3/8 ratchet will fit the hole in the end, but it's not going to give you anything like enough torque to help. Don't know about the socket size needed. Sorry. What a pain!

Not on mine - the square isn't on mine, wouldn't mind getting a lid that has though as it'd be a dam site easier to get just the wrench in the gap!

There was some talk a while ago about VX doing an adapter plate to allow a standard spin on filter to fit, not sure if a part number ever came to light.

It could well be a 24. I don't have one!

Tried a 1" but its just slightly too large and started to slip. So its time for a trip to the tool shop for a 24mm socket. Wonder what else I'll see when I'm in there. This could be expensive!

Thanks for your help guys  :y

I find the new sytle filter OK. Done a few oil changes on mine and it has been less hassle than a screw on filter TBH. I wish I could find a position in which I can unscrew it without oil dribbling down my arm.

I think it's probably either leaving them untouched for 20,000 miles - in accordance with the manufacturer's service schedule, or someone having done them up bu66er tight when it says 15nm on the lid that kills them.  Put a socket head on something and the average main dealer technician will go looking for a breaker bar to nip it up with ::)

It winds me up that the filters cost more than the conventional metal ones despite lacking the metal casing though.

Definitely a 24mm socket. Been and bought one. Still needed to lie on my back with both feet on the breaker bar before the barsteward would move though.

Unbelievably, the dealers had a replacement housing cover in stock!! So 2.6 meega back on the road!

Thanks for the advice guys  :y
