 :-? Hi all , joined as i'm looking to buy an MV6 , found two , both '98 model , one estate with 79,000 miles and one saloon with 18,000 miles(and i've seen the history).... I need to know a bit more about these cars , like cambelt changes etc.. The Saloon is lovely but at around 10 yrs old , will/should it need a cambelt change? The estate at 79k is almost due for one from what I have read. It may have been done , but i've not seen the car yet. The Estate is black has full leather etc and is MANUAL! The saloon is Champagne coloured , has cloth seats and is an Auto! What do you reckon ? Looked at other makes of car but ended up at MV6s every time.... ;D

If you have a rake around the assorted howtoo's and guides there is a wealth of info available here.

Most important, cambelt and tensioner change due at 40 k miles or 4 years, not the 80k miles as per originally listed by VX.  If the V6 lets go (and it will.....) due to old age tensioners, its new engine time.....

The low mileage one sounds good.....  Service history to prove mileage?  The cars are easily clocked so ensure the miles are good and that there is a first class service history, with receipts, to back evrything up.  If not, adjust price accordingly....

Going to post this here too...
Will look at the 79k estate tomoz and see what has been done in the way of servicing ... Nice looking car .... The other one is having some minor blemishes sorted tomoz (scrape on front bumper) and is still hot on my list. Any ideas how much I should budget for a cambelt /water pump change , so I can use it as leverage on a bit of discount     ;D

on a V6 i'm thinkin "garage" price, about £250-£300 all in...?

Hmm, plus the saloon needs a rear box ..... and a minor touch up on the rear drivers side door (just under the window lower rubber , small rust blister) , so there's at least £300 off asking price....

The estate however , I haven't seen , so if I said at least £250 off asking price (both are in dealers) I should be getting somewhere... Cheers for the response...

Recently joined a Transit forum and got great help there too.... cos I ballsed up my transit cambelt ::)

Ahh , it was my fault ..... ignored what it said in the Haynes book of lies ..... Got a Peugeot 405 Mi16 one to do soon as the previous owner didn't do the job properly and bent 4 valves. Having now lapped in 16 valves I can understand the importance of getting it right first time.... I have rebuilt a couple of 8 valve engines and had no problems. I do all my own work as a rule as I don't trust small garages since one balsed up my old 405 estates clutch. I even work on the Transit at the side of the road , outside of my house (did a clutch change).... Currently working on the bodywork on a slightly crashed Citroen Paxo.

The v6 one needs to be done as a kit, belt and tensioners. Also, you MUST use locking/timing kit, no exceptions.

As stated, 40k or 4yr, whichever sooner, no matter what you are told or read.

it depends what you want the car for, comfy cruiser / tower then auto.

the above but with a bit of fun, better performance and lots sideways action then the manual no question.

The black MV6 estate was not very good for the money £3k!
