Air Bags
« on: 24 December 2007, 20:31:00 »

Hi and a Merry Xmas to you all  :)

Is it possible to disconect the drivers airbag and change the steering wheel for a after market wheel (Momo etc etc) and still have all the other airbags working correctly, just in case some thing goes wrong and you need them one day  ::)

Don't know if this will work but it could be usefull just when you really need it...

This, BTW is when you really need it. 40 mph can be the moment your timer runs out.

IF YOU DISCONNECT THE AIR BAG YOU WILL BRING THE WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH, AND SHOULD YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT  THE INSURANCE CO MAY BE INTERESTED AS TO WHY YOU DISABLED A SAFTEY SYSTEM. BE CAREFUL MATE. :y

The air bag system is NOT MOT'able though. I'd have thought the insurance would assume that you'd have less chance of making a claim if the SRS system didn't work.  :o  :y

I know that if you diconect the steering wheel airbag, the warning light will come on, what I want to know is, is there a way to make the system think that the steering wheel airbag is still conented when it is not !!! and all the other airbags would still work OK if the car was in an accident.

The air bag has got nothing to do with a insurence claim, i've seen cars smacked hard in the front and the aor bags havent gone off so no problems there and it plays NO part in the mot..
If you remove the drivers bag then the system will fault, there is no way to get the others to work unless you have the drivers one..

If u remove the drivers one then the rest wont work and the air bag light will be on, if your happy to have no air bags then just remove the bulb from the dash..  :y

You may be able to substitute a resistor, I have vague memories of a post somewhere that gave a value.

Lose more than you gain though.

Not worth it.

The safety systems are designed around airbag use, if you don't mind the smashed face in the event of an accident. Pre air bag safety systems were slightly different.

An aftermarket wheel doesn't make it go faster or handle better.

There are equipped steering wheels available. I think MIkeDundee has one

Who said that I want to make the car go any faster or handle better, by fitting an aftermarket steering wheel and also you don't always get a smashed face in an accident, I didn't when I stuck my old Mondeo through a hedge at 75 mph and the f*^king airbag didn't go off then, have a look on some Salvage sites, I've seen car that the airbag should have gone off but hasn't and some side impacts where it has  ::) you pays your money and you take your chances, thats life.  :y

For all the sake of messing around mate and blowing ur head off over a air bag switch i'd just keep your wheel as it is.

I might be speaking outa term here but i don't think a momo steering wheel will really suit the inside of a omega after all it's not really that sort of car more like a long distance cruser...

have to agree with others, why on earth would you want to put a 'race' look wheel in?

You reducing the saftey if you have a crash, just for that sporty looking steering wheel??

Its fine in something like a Nova which does not have airbags, but in a modern car its going to look as right as a £9.76 bank note!
