Okay, spent a couple of hours in the old girl today and noticed more things.
The blower for the CC blows at full strength even though the air coming out isn't anywhere near the temp i set it at also if i turn the temp down to cabin temperature the blowers cycle down, which got me thinking, i think the CC panel is okay, its doing what it should be doing, if the hot water isn't getting into the matrix, it would blow hard forever and a day and never warm up.
Tomorrow, weather permitting i am going to drain the system and flush the HBV.
What tells the HBV to switch over letting water flow through the heater matrix and can i fool it into doing that?

simply changing HBV will be easier I think..

Rather than bodge/fool it, You need to check your vaccum pipe condition and routing. Use the Guides in the relevent technical/maintenance section

Having been there in the last couple of weeks, I would also flush the matrix to make sure that water can get through it even if the HBV is switching correctly. ( I changed the HBV, but it made no diff to the heat getting into the cabin - flushed the matrix and I now have a warm car!).

Now which to do first, I don't know.  Advice on the forum seems to be HBV, but this is the second Vauxhall that I've had where I've had to flush the matrix.

Up to you to decide which to do first - you may find flushing the matrix a quicker job, perhaps?

I didn't mean it as a bodge, i wanted to prove whether the HBV was faulty or the vacuum from wherever wasn't present.
I don't actually know what provides the signal to switch the water flow...
Where is the vacuum from??

Why dont yopu flush the coolant system out mate and also check the valve and follow the vac hose from the hbv to where ever it goes for leaks and splits...  

Many people on here seam to get lucky with just a good flush out...

thats job 2 today, job 1 is change the plugs, just found all four plug wells completely full of oil.....

Climate panel has an electrical output to a solenoid valve which uses engine vacuum to operate the HBV so check the vacuum system as mentioned. If you remove the vacuum line from the HBV there should be no suction on it when heating is required. With the vacuum pipe removed you should get flow through the heater matrix regardless.

It was an airlock after all, drained the system and refilled it and hey presto, it now blows hot

I'm a little concerned at the amount of oil i found in the plug wells, they were all completely full of oil.
I'm going to buy a rocker cover gasket set and have a go at that next.
Where's the best place online to get one from??

Vx dealer is best.......not expensive  

Dont forget to check/clean the breathers out......in case they caused the gasket to let go.
Gasket went on my 2.2 as well, i did clean the breathers as well but they wernt blocked.

Get a pack of O rings for the cam cover bolts as well + black goo if you havent got any

And 8nm for the bolts for the cam cover

The black goo goes round the perimeter with the gasket i presume, in the same place the previous bunch of monkeys put the double glazing sealant

Black goo doesnt go all the way around......just on the sharp corners.......that is, on the half moons, in the corners.

To try to explain better.....cm or so of goo along the flat leading up to the half moons...goo into the corner and cm or so past it.

So 2 lines of approx 2-3cm in length of goo per half moon.

Its only the half moons that need the goo, nowhere else is it needed

Ohhh should have mentioned if you havent got a mirror on a flexible arm............get one  

You may need to use the black goo to hold the rubber half moons of the new gasket in place at the rear of the cam cover.....let the goo go off for about 10mins........saves a lot of frustration if they keep falling out of the cam cover when trying to fit it.

Mirror is to check the rubber half moons have seated properly........if they havent and you dont check........you will pi$$ oil out.

I bet thats whats happened now, its pi$$ing out at the back of the engine somewhere.
Happened after i got it back from a head gasket change. I bet they didn't check the breathers too.
