Power loss and spluttering
« on: 06 January 2008, 20:07:22 »

alright sports fans....

Got a real problem with the running of my car!! I drove home from work this morning and everything was fine!

I parked the car up and went to bed with everything working as it should. I set of for work tonight and she done the usual of holding in first gear to super heat the cats before the auto up-shifted as per normal.

Pulled up at the local paper shop and then set off on my merry way. After about half a mile, i went to pull away from a set of traffic lights and had a real problem getting the car to move!

The engine was cutting and spluttering as if the traction control was engaged and playing silly buggers with the ignition timing and about as much forward progress was being made!! Almost sounding as though i am missing a cylinder or two. But with the car in either park or neutral the engline will rev although not cleanly. Whilst under load the engine struggles to rev above 2 grand

Its not the coil pack because the engine is not shaking its tits off and there is no engine management light showing on the dash display

I will take it into vauxhall when i finish work this morning but just hoping you can shed a bit of light on it for me so i am not totally in the dark!!

thanks again everyone

It does sound like the coil pack to me.....remember that on the DIS setups the ECU can not detect a fault with the secondary windings on the coils and does not report miss fires.

missing with no EML is often HT related, so DIS, leads, or plugs.

Firstly, I would check for oil in plug wells, then probably change DIS (assuming plugs OK)

I did 532 miles 23/24 Dec delivering pressies... can ran like a dream not a problem in sight. Try to start it 24th -- would not run .. cranked fine. Went to check for spark by removing plug .. full of oil :(  5 out of 6 were wet (2 so bad you couldn't see the plug!) Spent 2 days doing rocker gaskets/breathers - yeah I know .. well slow but never done it before and screwed one bit up so had to repeat the exercise :( - Car fired up instantly and has run fine ever since.

So yes.. IMHO oil in plugs can cause sudden dramatic failure .. :(

Believe it or not ... I used a turkey baster to suck out as much as I could ...:[SWMBO spent a day looking for it then bought a new one !! ]  then kitchen paper towel on a thin screwdriver, then removed plug and wiped as much as I could before it drained into piston. Then cleaned plug and connector with carb cleaner paper towel. Very little smoke on start and the cats sound alright at the moment ....
