Which cam belt kit
« on: 01 February 2008, 11:53:46 »

Hello all
I have now got my shiny cam belt locking kit, I will buy a genuine water pump but which cam belt kit should I get ?.
I have not done this job myself before, I do have the OOF DVD.
I think I would be happier having a kit with the timing marks on the belt.
Any reccommendations please chaps.

The marks aren't really needed tbh, just takes a couple more attempts.

The contitech kits seem to be liked here, if you can get the right type for yours

Where's the best (cheapest) place to get these?

Last time I looked, I couldn't find kit for the year I needed (there are 4 (I think) v6 cambelt kits)

This is the one I bought.

The Gates belts have the markings on - which helps. The rollers are SKF which is the same as everyone else.

Just wondering why you haven't had your Cambelt kit from Vauxhall, or are the bits you have bought genuine Vx?

The Vx belts don't have the markings but they do have SKF bearings.

Even on Trade Club they're not fantastic value.

www.bypartsby.co.uk do the contitech kits (look for Timing Belt, not Cambelt) at £53.72 + VAT.

Eeeek, now I am really confused, up to 4 different kits. OK should I quote engine number to get the right one, or is done by year of manufacture or chassis number or my inside leg measurement.

Thanks everyone

Hi Jason H, just looked at the ebay link and according to VSC (vauxhall spares centre) the cambelt kit he was selling fits just about all V6 engines 1994-03;
X25XE,Y26SE,X30XE and Y32SE.
I thought there were differences especially on the newer 2.6/3.2 engines (timing adjusters slightly different)
The reason i mention this is because i'm after one myself,(Y26SE engine)
VX quoted me £97.18 plus vat (with trade card)
Is that a good price for a genuine part? although i think i'd prefer a belt with the markings on it (it'll be my first belt on a V6) need all the help i can get (got the DVD)

Hi Tomoco,

read this before doing your 2.6 - lots of excellent advice given about the non adjustable idler which you may have in yours - the date of yours is close to the change from adjustable to non adjustable!!!

Tomoco you definitely need your engine number to get the right kit. The VSC one above is only for certain engine numbers for the 2.6 Omega.

Hi Mantahatch,
If you're in doubt which kit, go to Vx quote engine No
Someone before me had fitted the wrong kit to my car. Fortunatey no great damage.

I don't know about VSC offer that seems to cover all. The kit for my 3.2 is different to the 3.0 one.
Don't worry about not having belt markings, it's not difficult to manage without.
