condonsation build up in oil filler
« on: 19 March 2008, 07:29:06 »

hi,i have a 2.5 petrol,i use it for big fishing trips all over the country and france,it runs with no probs, but unfortunatly i work about 3 miles from where i live, hence it does a lot of short journeys and i get the impression that these cars dont like it too much as i get white sludge build up just inside oil filler(about half an eggcup full a fortnight).i dont believe its head gasget as i clean sludge away from cap,do a 300 mile journey, and its still nice and clean with no oil/water loss...is there something i could do to minimise this except do a lot of miles regulary

Whose oil do you have in it. Apparently Vx's own semi-skimmed is less prone to emulsifying (sp?)

its normal on v6`s on short runs particularly in the cold weather.

Peronally i clean it off ad hoc and ensure the car gets a decent motorway blast and very regular servicing...that combination does the trick.

.. and pay extra attention to making sure the breathers stay clean if it gets short journeys.

Try getting hold of a piece of felt about 3to5 mm thick cut it to the length of the filler neck and wide enough to go round it and overlap by 25 mm or so then wrap it round the neck and fix in place with a couple of cable ties. This is a trick I learnt to stop the same thing on the old Viva which was very prone to it.
It happens because the filler cools down faster than the rest of the engine that causes condensation which mixes with the oil the result is the mayo.

In the case of the V6, it occurs because its the higest point in the engine so water vapour tends to boil off and up to this point. Unlike most engines, because the neck is tall, it doesn't get much oil splash from the cams which would normlay disperse the stuff.

I have to say I dont rate the basic shell oils.....
