Head Gasket or not????
« on: 21 March 2008, 21:00:47 »

Hi all,

I am new here - only just found this site despite owning 3 omegas!

I have a problem with my latest omega (a 1998 MV6). For the last few months my heater has not been getting very hot and neither had the engine (according to the temperature gauge). I have put up with this thinking that it is probably the thermostat.

However this past week the coolant level warning has been on. I topped up the coolant and thought nothing of it. Today I went to check the oil and found some whitish brown "goo" in the oil filler. My first thought was head gasket but after reading a few threads on here I am thinking it might be something else?

Any ideas anyone? All help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Scott

most likely cause of mayo on filler cap is short journeys.  Vx oil seems a little less prone to this.  Assume the breathers will be in same state.

I think its unlikely the HG has failed, more likely you have a coolant leak somewhere, in addition to your stat issue.

Goo in filler cap not indicitive of HGF. Its resonably normal for mayo in there if the car does short runs in winter...

Its very doubtful you have hgf failure - its rare on Omegas.

If your coolant expansion tank is goo free i see no significnt issues - and your right it may be the stat...

If theres oil iin coolant it may be oil cooler - more common but not a huge job...

hope this helps

If your thermostat is not working properly allowing the engine to run cool the mayo in the filler will get worse as the engine is not getting hot enough to dry out the condensation.  Also it will cause your fuel consumtion to increase significantly so it would be best to replace it ASAP.
