Poor Cabin Heat FIXED!!!
« on: 31 March 2008, 19:07:53 »

Hopefully this is the end of my long running battle to get cabin heat

The fix was to replace the heater matrix, what an awful job that was.

Lessons I have learnt, running a garden hose through the core is no indicator of it's ability to pass coolant.
The coolant circulation pump cannot overcome much resistance.

Blowing into the old core showed much higher back pressure than the new one. Perhaps a better test.

Don't expect the new core to come with orings and the captive nut.
Don't expect parts stores to stock the orings.

Don't be surprised if the new core is a different thickness, be prepared to pack or seal the gaps left.

On mine the captive nut had to be filed down to fit the new core.

I have experimented on the old one with compressed air, it shows no sign of distress after being blasted through with 90psi air. It has reduced the back pressure when tested on my lungs, knowing this, I might have tried compressed air on the car.

The main thing is my ears are resting, it is my wife's car.

Good to hear mate and well done, heat matrix change on most cars is a pig of a job and this one sounded no different.

Would be handy if you could take some pics of the old unit and of the O rings, nut, etc you were talking about.
