New cat fitted - now idling rough - eml on
« on: 29 March 2008, 09:16:50 »

Hi all - Had a new cat converter section of the exhaust fitted yesterday - all fine driving home (approx 3 miles) but this morning the car started idling rough but not stalling and now eml is on . On my old omega (2.0 16v) lamda sensor went  about a week after fitting new cat and symptoms were the same . I would read the code but my code readers also playing up!!! - would sensor have failed me again??

Was it a genuine exhaust?

Some pattern ones don't have the pre-cat in addition to the main cat, and cause an EML. Another member had issues with this about a month ago. I'd go straight back to the exhaust place.

If you can get the codes read it'd be worthwhile. I'd say unlikely to be the lambda sensor unless they've bu663r3d it.

This is pattern part but does have the two sensor positions .  Just changed the pre-sensor now but still idling rough - once a bit of throttle is applied its fine ! - I'll change post sensor later - just started to p**s down !!!

The post sensor won't cause it to idle rough. Only the pre-cat sensor has any input to how the engine runs. I'd check it for codes to see if it's complaining about anything.

A leaking EGR valve could cause idling problems. On the V6 it's possible to remove the valve and blank it off with a piece of metal cut to the right shape. Not sure about 4 pots. :-/

Could also try cleaning it out.

I had same symptoms a few months ago,  egr was problem. Fitted vx part and it failed after a couple of months, replacement one was fine. Mechanic told me of someone who went through five before getting good one, so much for vx parts and not cheap
