missfire and enormous smoke
« on: 08 May 2008, 10:46:48 »

Hi everyone I'm at a bit of a loss with my 1996 P v6 tourer . Just bought the car and did so knowing that it had a missfire problem . Read a lot of the posts and great advice that I saw here and felt pretty confident that I would know what to check/ do . I still need to run the paper clip test and make absolutely certain that there is no oil in plug holes . However there visually appears no leaks at all from the rocker cover gaskets and the engine seems mint clean and has covered 80000 miles .
What is concerning is the amounts of unburnt fuel coming out of the exhaust I put my finger in the end of the exhaust and what I found was neat petrol also the amounts of smoke when the car is running is beyond a joke .I was hoping that someone had encountered similar or maybe this smoking is a normal symptom of a spark plug / leads / dis unit problem .
I absolutely love the feel of the car and its all round in excellent condition so to cure this is high priority .
A mechanic friend also suggested an injector problem perhaps just hosing fuel into the cylinder or cylinders as the car smells like an arabian oil field and the volume in the exhaust of unburnt fuel
If someone could help I would be very grateful
Cheers guys all the best Steve

Is the smoke around the engine, or out of the exhaust?

I would NOT use the car as the neat fuel will destroy the Cats .. if it has not already done so ... :(  and Cats are VERY expensive .. :(

BTW  .. "Hello" and Welcome to OOF  :)

Thanks guys not driving it currently the smoke is from the exhaust I guess in the form of unburnt or part burnt fuel smoke wondered if this was symptomatic of the electrical missfire topic that features large here or whether the excessive smoke was pointing to something else . Should I be looking towards an injector and fuel problem . I guess the question would be given the symptoms where should I start ?
Thanks all Steve

i would start with the dispack, leads or plugs.

it seems as thought it is not running on 6, this in turn means the fuel is following the path of the gases and so exiting out of the exhaust as neat petrol.

as others have said to continue to run it will only kill the cat or cars if it both sides, you didn't say if the paperclip test brought up and codes, i can only presume they didn't then.

I doubt faulty injector, they are more prone to shutting than flooding, go with the easy stuff first and work your way from there.

the misfire, is it all the time or just certain points?

thanks for that I will run the diag paperclip test first and go with the simple stuff plugs leads and dis unit first as you suggest . It seemed a lot of smoke and a lot of fuel prescent at the back box I didn;t know if this was common when a missfire fault developed . The miss is completely across the range so nothing being injected into whichever cylinder is the culprit is being burnt . I guess these cars like a drop of fuel so the unburnt in the exhaust is probably consistant with this .
Thanks for taking the time to reply will go in the direction you suggest.
All the best Steve

Had another thought .. as you've just bought the car I believe ....  :(

Does the EML light come on when you first switch on the ignition before starting the car ???

It should light up for a few seconds. If it does .. and goes out once you run the car it's probably just a problem on the HT side (plugs/leads/DIS)

If it doesn't .... :(  It's highly probable that someone knew about a problem and has taken the bulb out ......  (yes - its happened loads of times :( )... you can't "paperclip" it if that bulb is not working !!

Another thought along the line of unknown history...

Check the HT leads are connected in the right order on the DIS pack, the 2-4-6 bank is not as you would expect.

Thanks for sparing the time to consider this problem folks . The eml comes on and goes out as it should so no trickiness regarding that has been done . Will run the paperclip test as soon as I can and without electrocuting myself figure out which cylinder is down change the spark plug and lead on that one before moving to the DIS unit which I understand to be a bastard to get at / change . Thats assuming the paperclip test doesn't show a code that pinpoints something else
Really appreciate everyones help on this .
I love the car its 80000 miles one doctor owner and has a full history together with near mint body and interior so if I can fix this fault I'm going to be loving using it as a family estate .
Will keep you posted thanks again
