Whats Killing the Battery??
« on: 10 June 2008, 19:05:35 »

Some thing is killing my Battery (Omi 2.5 TD CDX Estate) and I’ve now run out of ideas, any help?

It started a few weeks ago, is intermittent and has done it 4 times now, always when you least prepared for it, If you park up and come back after a couple of hours the Battery would be totally dead (having got round the dead locking and opening the bonnet), the battery is down to 2 Volts!,  jump start perfect, charge Battery still perfect until the next time.

This is what I’ve checked so far:

Checked Battery fully charged, fine 12.6 Volts off 13.9 Volts on. Changed Battery anyway.
Checked Alternator, fine, will fully charge a dead Battery in about ½ an hour.
Checked both cooling Fans, fine, both run ok and switch off as they should.
Checked alarm, not going off.
Checked and disconnected both interior lights.
Checked Radio not on.
Checked lights are not left on.

Left the Car alone for the last few days, and periodically checked, all ok, started late last night, on the button, this morning dead, cant even get in.

Obviously some thing is draining the when switched off?, but as I said I’ve run out of ideas!

Chris.

the battery is down to 2 Volts!
A lead acid battery is dead at 10V... The chemistry is kaput and it wont charge back from there.

I suspect a poor ground connection is more likely. Where are you measuring the 2V?

Pull the HRW relay, just in case. Seen a CDL motor do same thing as well.

Ive replaced the Battery (thinking it might even be intermitant).

Im  measuring the 2V (after the incident) across the Battery Lugs only and the Leads.

your not parked near an airport?
I know that some radio key fob systems are on a similar frequency to the ATC at airports so when they transmit the car starts looking for the information.

Hmm try this, look down the side of the battery and you will see 2 wiring connectors clipped to a bracket, lift them out of the way and you will see the brake pipes from the abs unit ,study this very carefully where the wires rest on it and check the wires for chaffing
found a few with this fault which eventually burns out the loom!!!
not saying it is the faut you ave but it maybe!!
