Hi,

Driving home from work this evening and my battery warning light popped on.  Car still drives and starts and works ok as do all the electrics so I am not noticing any obvious issues.

I checked the voltages on the battery once I got home and got the below results:

Car off: ------- 12.8V
Idle:------------14.2V
Under high load (All lights and electrics on)-----13.6V


These seem alright to me. The warning light itself is dim, about half the strength it is when you turn on the ignition.

I am just wondering what my next step may be? Is it a sign of my alternator going?

Are you doing very short distances? I had the same problem when I got my Elite, but a good charge and it was fine.

Nope, I drive 40 miles to work every day and the same back and have been in this car for the last three or four months.

Check the battery terminals for overheating, known problem is loose/coroded connection where cable enters terminal, this is known to give this sort of problem. If those are OK check the connections at the alternator end as well.

Make up a cable with two ring connectors one either end and connect this from the top of the plenum to go to the negative teminal on the battery. This is ok to do as the rac done this for me last month to get my battery charged up whilst I was on holiday. Once you have done this then check after you have got back from work and see what the voltage is aftre you have done this. If the voltage is better then you could have a earthing problem with the negative cables.

Once I had bought new cables and fitted them to the car I have had no problems at all. This is a cheap temp fix which will determine your problem.
