3.2 coil packs, cracks?
« on: 16 July 2008, 00:28:49 »

the boy did a diagnostic at the wim open day and found a miss fire code which he cleared. Along with some oil around the left bank, i thought i better check the plug wells for oil and do the plugs themselves. No oil found thank god, so i guess someone was a bit clumsy topping it up,  but i found what looks like tiny cracks around the square base of the middle plug coil, mostly(the bit with the brass coloured  metal plates you can see through the holes, and the square block above it, when viewed upside down ) they could be mold marks as the line seems raised but they are only the pas side and to irregular i think. All was well as far as i could see apart from that so i wondered if that could cause a missfire, then i remembered the pedal test(Der) and after assembly and spin  round the block(and a bit of a play with a tricked r7, i lost) this showed a constant flashing which i presume means no codes. Will do test again to keep an eye on it, but are the cracks/lines a concern? could they cause missfire?  or was the code more likely to be an old one and i am making i fuss over nothing?
Cheers all.

If the cracks are around the brass inserts for the mounting screws could it be that they've been overtightened at some point?

Might be worth giving it a coat of "damp start" to seal the cracks. That might prolong its' life once the weatehr starts to get cold and damp.

its wierd, drivers side is fine, does the pas side get hotter with the cable tray over the top? why play with the screws? is there anything to fiddle with inside? i suppose there must be or why have screws and not a sealed unit? the pattern of the lines looks like cracks, like a lightening pattern, and do seem to radiate out from the corners, with even finer lines around 1 or 2 of the screws, but there is no depth to them, more of a raised line. damp start sounds good idea, but it means taking the plenum off again :(for that side.
i took some picks but the lines are so fine its difficult to see. wioll give it a go later. thanks for replys gents :y

Hi,
I had the driver side CPP unit on mine fail. Easy one to get at.
It started with missfiring ocaisionally when really warmed up, ie 150 miles or more.

The cracks on mine were around the square base with the laminations in it, but also had fantastically fine hairline cracks only visible with a x20 magnifying glass, on the HT insulator noses that go to the springs that connect to the top of the plugs.  I think it is these that cause the problem.
I tried WD 40 as temporary remedy, didn't work, in fact made things worse.

I think cause of this failure is oil in plug wells transferring heat. The one on mine that failed had oil in wells, other side no oil, and no sign of damage at all.

My advice is replace CPP unit before it gives you problems.
Vx price is £120 +  I got mine next day delivery about £75 from Vauxhall spares Co.

Reminder in case you hadn't noticed, Each CPP unit is handed.

HTH

thanks roger, no oil in wells but could have done in the past i suppose. Only 70 k on the clock and the old plugs where clean on the insulator, so no signs, and the brass layered parts had tiny tiny blobs of rust on them from condensation i guess so suspect not.  70 sobs doesnt sound to bad tho, nice one.  :y
