Worth changing the fuel filter for starters - its often neglected.

I would also recommend cleaning out the breather pipes/throttle body/idle control valve etc.  There is an excellent guide in the maintenance section on here.  Its an easy job and makes a world of a difference.

Give these a go - won't do any harm - and see how it goes then.

checked all breathers and throttle body all clear its wierd because once started, it starts all day after no problem and it runs excellent no misfires or splutters its just that stone cold starting issue.

What rpm does it idle at?  I had problems starting due to mechanical idle being mucked about with (by me - no-one else to blame I'm afraid)?

Although I'm not a mechanic

checking order should be

fuel delivery ,

ignition components  (sparks , cabling and other)

compression testing..

also solution could be as simple as air leak from gaskets..

idle is about 800rpm and smooth, once started from cold after at least three attemps it wont seem to rev just spits and pops after 20 secs it runs perfect :(

Not idle problem then.  Either too much fuel or too much air.  Check for air leaks first.

Check the plugwells for oil as jimmas says and another favourite is to take the plug cover off in the dark and see if you have a firework display.

Worth checking for fault codes, esp as 2.2 eats up cam sesnors, which make them a bugger to start

diagnostic showed crank sensor open circuit, new one fitted yesterday but still a pig to start this morning. so this cured eml but not the original cold start fault aghhh.
