Rebuilding a manual gearbox

Hi Guys,

I am considering the possibility of obtaining a second hand manual gearbox, and totally overhauling / reconditioning it, to the extent that it's as good as new.

This is not something I've ever done before, so I'm not sure what tools would be required, what parts I would need, or what the availability and cost of them would be, or if it would be within my capabilities.

Expert advice please :y

Is it the four speed (4L30E)? Wonder what the five speed (5l40E) would be like in it?

I have rebuilt several boxes over the years and although it can be done if you have common sense and a decent set of tools, and i know you have both James, it does depend on what you want at the end of the day. To buy all the bits, new bearings, washers, thrust rings etc etc it will cost you nearly as much as an exchange recon box with some guarantee, but, and here is the but they tend to only replace what needs replacing, if however you do the job yourself you will replace everything and know what is in the box, if this makes sense.

 I'm not up on my gearboxes... especially autos... which (if any) Omegas came with a five-speed auto?

Hardly any! apparently the very end of line Diesels did (It's listed in the manual with my car).

As the TD is really at it's best when 'on turbo' I wondered if the five speeder would suit the characteristics of the 2.5TD better? I believe that's the reason why VX fitted it to the 4 pot TD's at the end.

The question is, why do you want to? If it's for the engineering learning experience then fair enough, but otherwise I don't see the point. They rarely fail, and in the off chance that you're unlucky and it does fail then pick up a used one for peanuts -- due to lack of failures there's no demand for them on the used market meaning they're super cheap, and you'd be unlikely to have two fail unless you're running big power.

The only real failure point (wear and tear actually) is the clutch, and as you've replaced that you should be good for at least another 100K.
