Engine Oil Leak 2.5 V6 CDX
« on: 09 January 2009, 15:23:11 »

Hi A week ago i had a major oil leak on a engine i had put into the car.
took it back to garage and have had it returned to me today.
The mechanic said it was the o ring on the crank sensor perished and he thinks oil filter wasnt sealed properly so redone that.

Now the leak was (or still is) seemed to be comong from back passenger side. first though cam covers but it aint as the exhaust heat sheild is bone dry and no oil residue so it had to be under or behind that.

now he hasnt cleaned the engine off so its still covered in oil and dripping oil so im not 100% sure leak is fixed as havent used the car properly just a mile and half back home not getting over 30mph.

after putting on about cleaning the engine someone has said balls is it that no im scared to use th motor now incase im being told porkie pies.

can anyone shed any light on this

im going to clean engine off tomorrow with some gunk and hope he has fixed the leak otherwise we gonna have a fall out me thinks >:(

any suggestions appreciated

It could well be at the back of the passenger side bank, where the cam gasket has a 'D' section that it all too easily mispositioned when fitted due to its location next to a lifting bracket and the DIS pack. :( :(

Try putting your fingers behind this section if you can, perhaps using a mirror, to feel for oil and that 'D' shaped section of  gasket to ascertain if it is seated correctly. ;)

The crank sensor on the V6 is down beside the oil filter, so I can hardly see how the engine above that could become soaked in oil! ::) ::) ;)

Perhaps you already have your answer...  Mechanic chappy fixed an oil leak at the filter.  The crank sensor 'leaking' will not produce copious quantities of oil.

Clean the area with carefull application of gunk or other degreaser, clean well with water and see where it comes from.

LZ is possibly close to the mark with the rear parts of the cam covers but would still suspect the oil filter area....

What kind of oil filter do you have. Chuck away canister or ally housing with paper filter inside? The ally type is easilly buggered when garages over tighten it and either break it or loosen the base.

Surely under pressure if the oil filter wasnt tightened up properly (you have their own admission that the oil filter they supposedly put on as part of the service they did was loose!!) then when running the pressure would p*ss the oil all round the filter, not just leaking downwards (to try answer Lizzies Q?)...certainly if its losing at the rate it has been??

you could try looking at the oilcooler pipes round the oil filter and between the two banks (the rear of the two going into the oil cooler)

If he cant be trusted to put an oil filter on properly...can he be trusted to diagnose the oil leak correctly? lol
