glow plugs and coolant levels
« on: 14 April 2009, 08:38:27 »

My first job on my diesel 2.5 cdx v6 estate is to change the glow plugs, Ive had a read on here on step by step and ready to give it a go. Do I get vauxhall? or are there better/cheaper ones. I have fallen out with my local Vauxhall dealer ( they lie ) so dnt really want to go there.
My first job on my petrol 2.5 cdx v6 estate is to go and find the coolant tank and check my levels?? after reading another thread about lack of heating they keep mentioning this.

You must have the only one in captivity!
Assuming you have the BMW straight six lump use BERU glow plugs (OEM fitted) & avoid cheap ones of e-bay

Or you could use NGK glow-plugs - I've had no problems with these either.

i think as long as you stick to a recognised make of glow plug you cant go far wrong, as somebody else says avoid the cheapies that are made by "itchi fanni" or some other obscure company ;D

Ok thanks for that, I think I was putting the two cars together when I said 2.5 cdx td v6. As my intro said I havnt got a clue, YET. As for a bmw engine ????? Ive got alot to learn. There seems to be so many models, engines , parts etc and now having two of them.
This may sound  daft but what colour oil should be in the diesel? Im sure it shouldnt be the black goo thats in mine?

The 2.5 turbo diesel engine in the early omegas was borrowed from BMW, also used in rangerovers :y

It soon changes back into black goo again, after you've changed it.

the oil will be black. Best thing is to change it now, then ensure you change every 3000 miles

Ok glow plugs and oil change, Im not sure Im ready for all that but going to give it a go and ready to get dirty! Ref engine how do I know what it is. Ive been out there in the dark and my two engines are so different. Petrol one spotless clean and the diesel is filthy. I dnt think Ive mentioned it has an oil leek. Guess that should be sorted before the oil change! Syd the diesel ( thats its number plate ) and Pete the petrol ( it was getting a complex as it didnt have a name ) Both need a bit of work, ok alot of work. I work for myself so have the time to but they are large beasts to be playing with compared to my little astra I tinkered with.
Should I make sure there is nothing major with both of them before I start with the oil etc.
Or I could list all problems and get an idea from you guys what is the future for my 2 sheds?

If your diesel is a pre 2000 car it will be the 6 cylinder straight 6 BMW boat anchor lump
