You can I did!

Little holes on the gasket were both at the same end of the engine

 :-/ I know it's now irrelevent now, but, using the gaskets above, which way were they wrong. Did you spin them along a north/south axis or an east/west axis? Either way your oil way wouldn't be lined up.

but you could have had it upside down withthe oil hole on the correct side.

I've only ever done a 6 cylinder where they were ALL in line!
