As some may remember, my car needs a respray (badly !).





All panels have been damaged so it needs a complete job. I have managed to get hopefully all the stuff I need to do it, 2 compressors, air-fed mask, several spray guns, a mass of different tins of paint, hardener, thinners, primers etc, and it looks like the weather will be good up here for the next 3 days, so I am planning to do it.

I have very limited spray experience so have been reading up what I can but there are still a few nagging queries.

Like :

Obviously I should sand the whole car to key the fresh paint, but should I prime the whole car or just the damaged bits ?.

They say 2 coats of primer, should it be dry between coats, or do I spray one coat, wait 5mins and spray the next ?.

Does it need to be a fresh mixed batch for each priming coat, or do I mix enough for the whole job at once ?.

How much paint will I need for a complete car respray ?.

I would welcome any sugestions or hints.

Hi. good luck mate
I would prime the whole car after i've sanded it to get the top shine off it.
Yes let the coats dry inbetween.
and Mix enough paint so you have the same colour on the car and not darker or lighter shades.

I am planning to use 2 pack, doesn't it go off fast ?. I am worried if I wait until the primer is dry on the car, the stuff in the gun will have set as well.

Not to sure but it should not happen that fast.

If it was brake fluid or Nitromore's you will have to naturalise the areas first or it will start to show though the paint again very soon.Ask your paint supplier will know what to use.It's no good just rubbing down with wet and dry.

I was planning to take the damaged bits down to bare metal and use etch primer first. And of course use plastic primer on the plastic bits. Its a complicated business this painting !.

Only problem is whatever it is .it will have got right into the metal so you will need neutralise with chemical.i know because this happen to a mates car.the insurance paid for a respray but within 3 months you could see the affected areas going funny.The second respray included a full body degrease and some other liquid that neutralised the areas.Insurance company was not happy forking out again. spending half a day more on the prep is better than doing the hole thing again a couple of months down the road

Thanks for that, I will go to the paint shop and ask him what to use.

I tried spraying a section before and a bit on the roof got what I think are called "fish eyes". Something to do with silicon polish having been used in the past.

Do you have a garage to do the painting in?

Are you mixing the paint yourself or can you buy it from Vx.

I guess all you can do is combine the info received from here with any research off the net.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a large enough garage, however the drive here is pretty good, not many flies etc, not too much wind, however the sun may heat part of the car and not all of it. I managed to get the paint mixed up by a local shop, gave him the paint code and he "assures" me its the right colour !.

Only advice i can give is that you try to get somewhere indoors, dust and draught free. Otherwise no matter how careful you are a gust of wind puff up & you are back to square one. Some colours are more forgiving with dirt particles but with your being a dar colour it will show once you have applied the laquer.

even if you hire a little marquee four a couple of days just to give you a bit of shettle
