catalytic convers and central locking
« on: 25 September 2009, 21:56:43 »

Hi
So when i first got this omega about a months ago i had an EML when going 'quite fast', took it to garage and they changed lambda sensors. Then it came on again after more motorway driving and ive thought this was the catalytic converter as advised by garage. However simply i havnt got the money to get this repaired, especially after having to buy a complete exhaust for the bloody thing soon after getting it.
anyways lately ive noticed the exhaust has been smoking a lot and it smells of rubber burning at the back when i get out. Would this be the catalaytic converter or something else?

Also central locking issue, wont open drivers door, nor will pulling up the pin....i got it open eventually by giving the door a good shove but the central locking on drivers door has been dodgy lately, any ideas?
i know i could use the key the old fashioned way but i dont have one for the door..

Furious, disgusting garage blatantly sold me a dodgy car saying its perfect. As i know buggar all about cars i accepted this....never buy a car without someone who properly knows the score

I guess the drivers door solenoid (or whatever the name in englis) is dead.
Check the breakers here for part, it will probably be very cheap to get another one

when a cat go's u can only tell properly is it to be tested, rubber smell, may be there is to much additivesinthe fuel, like injecter cleaner, door lock there is a bar inside it may of come off or the solinode has gone. may just need some WD40 in the lock to fix it,

im not sure if it was rubber, i'll have to smell it again, only noticed it today
What additives would be likely to be in the fuel then? would this be down to using petrol from Tesco?

Looks like tomorow afternoon i shall be taking apart my door then  ::)

it could be there are lots of aditive in fuel, some times to meany, they can start bloking up the injectors,, do a paper clip test and see if any thing comes up som time they dont. :y

If the light is still on do the pedal trick ,see if 0420 or 0430 appear.

being a 3.2 i dont see anything too badly wrong with your car, beleive it or not.
The door problem is annoying but not unusual for an Omega.
The cat problem i would guess will be the pre cat issue that there engines suffer with, although there is nothing too much to worry about as this issue will not cause any problems at MOT time.

To confirm you need to do the pedal trick as described in the maintenance section under paper clip test. This trick will read any engine fault codes stored. If you have a light on the dash you will have a code stored. If you see 0420 or 0430 then you have the pre cat issue. There is a fix, so no need to buy new cats. See how you go with pedal trick. Post your results. :-)

thanks guys, ill check tomorow

do you think running expensive petrol through it might help? i know tesco and total have an expensive version of petrol but shell has a super expensive version i believe?

i normally use the cheapest stuff, as i imagine most would.

it could make it worse to use higher quality fuel?
i thought they were supposed to have 'cleaning properties' aswell
as its got half a tank i'll be able to find out whats wrong by the time i need to fill up anyway i hope.

if you dont find out for sur what is wrong you couldend up damaging the cat or worse. run the engine on tick over until engine is warm'd up then smell the exhaust by hand and see how it smells, if it smell like roton eggs it the cat and it will go away as still new ish, if smells like strong funny smell makes u wont to throw up its the additives in the fuel are to high. :y

Modern fuels don't contain too high levels of additives!! :-?

Fuel wont make a f*** of a differance if its the pre cat issue imho. Probably wont make any differance at all tbh.
As said, you need to do the pedal trick to read the engine fault codes. Until then, any further discussion is pointless as will be pure guess work.

Get and act on the correct info. Do the pedal trick and post the results.

yes thay do dont you read or see the news, happens all the time, Tesco's 2weeks ago, and there are others, it happens all the time. last year alone over 2500 cars in the uk had to have the fuel take out of there tanks do-to to meany additives in the fuel, even lorrys, its like putting 10 2L bottels of injector cleaner in half a tank of petrol,. read the news.
