Yer and, you will find that with the old reg numbers (X123 ABC), when the new plates came out in Aug / Sept lots of people had just one number, then some had two and so on, my bike had a single number back in 1984, but It wasn't a private plate, just a normal reg. You can get private plates in the States and Oz but not here they are all what Swansea have given out, not ones that you or I have made up.

If you want to be pedantic  ::) you have to go back to 82? when you last got an 'ordinary' number of less than 20 or 21 (can't remember exactly) cos since the number layout went from ABC 123A to A123 ABC Swansea kept hold of the single digit & *teen regs and all other nice to have regs. I also had a 5 character reg years ago that wasn't a 'private' regestration but if I still had it to sell Swansea would still be charging £80 for the 'cherished transfer'

Does anyone know?

The plate itself has no value and belongs to the car, so before agreeing to write the car off you could transfer the registration to certificate form at your local DVLA office - I'm sure the insurance wouldn't care less  ;)

I think so long as the car is still MOTd you can pay £80 I think and put it on a retainer which lasts for 12 months :y

The plate Belongs to the DVLA and you only own the right to use it on a specified car or keep it on a retainer for 12 months at a time,If you let the retainer lapse you will forfeit your right to use the number. >:(
It is best to transfer the number to another car. :y
swmbo has N15A  KX as her name is Anisa K**** shortened to NISA good plate for her ;D

VRM is property of DVLA - you only hire it for as long as you want it/pay for it....

Cost to transfer to another vehicle £80.

Cost to transfer to apper retencion cert £105.

All must be done before official ownership passes to any other interested party - ins company or scrap dealer - before vehicle papers pass through your hands.......
