re fuel filter removal on 03 estate
« on: 02 May 2010, 16:16:33 »

Can anyone please tell me the method needed to disconnect the plastic fuel pipe end connectors off the fuel filter unit located between the tank & the diff? I'm finding it very hard to manipulate to find the method due to arthritic hands and fingers and can risk breaking the connectors if I use tools without knowing where and how to apply force. Is it:- 1, push in, twist, then pull. 2, Twist, then pull. 3, squeeze, then pull,or whatever. or does it need a special tool? The connectors don't appear to be seperate from the pipe so if I break any that would mean trouble,Any help would be apreciated.

You can buy a special tool cliff for about £8 from machine mart, screwfix etc,but it can be done with 2 small screwdrivers,by squeezing the two sides in,and pull to realease, but it can be a bit of a pain sometimes. :y

Even with the above guide, and using a pair of the suggested pliers, and non-athritic hands, I found getting the clips undone very difficult. I was really lucky not to break the clips on the fuel line as I had to pull very hard to free the filter. Got a nice face-full of petrol as well. Could have done with another pair of hands to be honest.

Not trying to put you off mate, just preparing you so you know what you're dealing with  ;D

if you release  the pressure in the fuel lines via the schrader valve first, or remove the fuel pump relay and turn the engine for s few seconds it makes release much easier and you dont et a face ful of petrol,

Thanks all for your help. How did I miss that super maintenance guide? I finally managed although I didn't use the special pliers didn't have any and it was Sunday, the more I tried the worse the clips were getting, so in desperation I took one hard look at the clip design and got a length of 1cm ally tube I had in my junk, cut a 1cm length off, split it in half down the length, and slid these down the filter inlet tubes into the clip to disengage the clip tang, hey presto, easy release, just thought I'd pass this on as it really was so easy, hope I've managed to explain ok :y :y
