Cambelt change on 2.2
« on: 02 July 2010, 12:11:19 »

Hi there, just bought a 2001 Omega saloon with 69000miles on the clock and as there is no history of when the cambelt has been changed I've ordered a cambelt kit and water pump.

I'm a little apprehensive as I've never done work on my own car before.

Is this a pretty simple job?  I've ordered the dvd from OOF.

If I struggle is there anyone in the warrington area who could give me a hand or wouldn't mind doing the job for a small fee?

Cheers,

Allan

Elite Pete or Darth Loo Knee are not far from you, might be worth dropping them a PM  :y

Alan, you shouldn't have any probs especially with the help of the DVD. It (the dvd) is a bit amateurish in places, but non the less very informative. I had never attempted anything so  'technical' for years, & i'm not that mechanically minded so you should manage OK. You must get the cam locking tool though! it's only about £6-7, made of blue high impact plastic by Draper I believe, & readily available, I bought mine from ebay. Any help required, just give me a PM or ask for help in 'General Help'.  :y

Not really a kit on the 2.2's its just a locking wedge!

Hardest bit i found is getting the new belt on, its very tight getting it over the tensioner

i just bought a 2.2 where i didn't know the history,it might be a good idea to physically check the belt, tensioners and especially the water pump before forking out for the kit etc.I found on mine that it had all been done very recently ie:water pump and tensioners are all as good as brand new, then i found out from the guy i got it from that it was done 5k ago,you never know...........

Utterly pointless in reality, a tensioner will look the same at 1k or 50k. You won't know until you take it off and spin it freely. If history is unknown, change it regardless.  :y

No, but much better odds that it survives longer than current one!

Why say that? Some of the regulars who knows engines inside out won't but there are members here who have paid mroe than that to get their car on the road again!

all i'm saying is that any member of this forum that has problems with their car can rely on members like yourself and numerous others to come up with solutions to their problems and spare parts etc at a fraction of the cost of going to a dealer, lets face it you can buy a very nice, well looked after omega on this forum for that sort of money, didn't mean any offence by it.

If you were to take a car to a garage after having had a cambelt failure and ask them to fix it .. I doubt the bill would be less than £1000 .. the reason for my comment.

It's one thing Daz, Pete etc driving somewhere to do a cambelt change .. its a tad different then going to the same place to do a complete engine rebuild !!!

Not every member has the time, tools or ability to do a complete engine rebuild, and some will be geographicaly situated that they will not be able to get Forum help.

You may save a ton or so by not changing the belt on schedule, you may blow a grand on a top end rebuild if it goes so as Clint said "Do you feel lucky? Well do you?"
