Are you sure it wasn't the water pump that needed changing?

As said above... oil pumps don't go very often, and when they do it is not easy to replace... water pump is easy if the front bits are off anyway for the cambelt change. If you do suspect oil pump, the first thing to do is check the actual oil pressure with a proper gauge.

Dealer said there was oil over the engine when i brought it in to change the cam belt .. so it needed changing ?!?! Had no indication of any oil trouble before though!

I've only ever heard one member saying his oil pump had gone, and he changed the engine because it was such a massive job.

OIl pump failure would not result in oil being all over the engine. The first signs would be a nasty noise from the top end.

It nearly makes me weep with despair when I read dealers saying
this kind of stuff.

What they meant is that there's a 50p seal gone somewhere near the oil pump so we'll change the 50 quid oil pump. >:(

bet its the cam cover gaskets..

try pulling an HT lead of a spark plug (front left is easiest) and see if you can see oil.

They probably think that if people are stupid enough to bring their car to a dealer, they are stupid enough to be conned....
