Cam sensor and gearbox fault codes

I had an interesting chat with a garage owner today...who rents out 2.2's converted to lpg as taxi's

I was telling him about my cam sensor problem and the codes i get.....ie cam sensor and 2 gearbox codes

He told me he's seen that before and was deffo the cam sensor faulty and after changing it the gearbox codes went away as well.

Now heres one for the guru's.....

His theory about why you get gearbox codes as well was.....

Just as the gearbox is about to change gear the engine ecu retards the timing....so you get a smooth change......faulty cam sensor and the ecu doesnt retard the engine so you get a jolt when the gearbox changes......hence the codes produced as it thinks theres summat wrong with the gearbox.

Now i must admit i sometimes get a jolt when mine changes gear......so his theory sounded pretty good to me........

Right/Wrong????

Wasnt disputing you AA  ;).........do you reckon vx dealer got it right today???  :-/

You've got to wonder why some garage owner knows that about the cam sensor and the Vx dealership doesn't.  ::)

Having just read this thread it has got me wondering. I have a pre face lift 2.0 GLS Auto that will not drive when put into Drive (if you know what I mean) !!

It pulls fine when its in 3 but the other day it started playing up engine wise. It was as if it was running on one cylinder and after a short journey I had smoke and a burning smell from the gearbox area. So I thought it needs a new box as I have asked questions about it on the forum previously which Ronald McBurger confirmed to be true.

Anyway I thought I would take it to my local garage who I get on with realy well for good old diagnostic check. These are the codes it came up with: P0725 - Crank Sensor, P0730 - Mechanical Gearbox Fault and P1850 - Shift solenoid on Gearbox. So now after reading this thread I'm kind of thinking (well more wishing) that it's just the crank sensor thats causing it all.

I phoned Vx to see how much they would rob me for a new sensor (£36) then got onto Ebay (£16 delivered). I am very intrigued to give it a try when I get it to see if that makes any difference. I'm sure it will at least make it run properly but it would be a bonus if it turned out their is nothing wrong with the box.

The cam sensor theory sound feasable.....with the 2.2 being coil per plug the cam sensor pays a more important role with the ignition system.....

You might have a faulty crank sensor......but burning ATF (and you can tell, it has a distint smell) would point to knackered gearbox......unless the ATF is leaking and burning off on the exhaust.

Ah right. That sounds like it's deffinately a new box then. The garage didn't say anything about leaks so I guess it's not that. I had kind of convinced myself it was the box anyway.
The sensor should be here tomorrow so I will bang that on and see if that improves the running. Need to find a decent AR25 then. I will keep an eye on here for one but if anyone has one please shout.
