Hi
I have had a burning smell in my car when I stop since this cold weather started. Everything is working ok.
Not sure if it comes from outside or from behind dash etc
Omega 3.2 elite estate.
Anyone any ideas?

posted similar a while back, one theory offered, might be the other additives in the salt used on the road if it gets on the exhaust or hot brakes.....possibly?

thinking about it, certainly seemed to coincide with fresh grit on our road.

Yes, smell slightly like burning rubber?

I think it's a tar-like agent that's added to road salt to bind it to the road and stop it getting washed away as quick.

good post - was out in Signum the other day and picked up a whiff like this when I got out of car - hopefully cause was the grit.

I recently had a really strong plastic burning smell ... was quite concerened till i looked underneath and noticed i had snagged a plastic bag and was nicely melting on the cat 

Still get a wiff of it two weeks later  :-/

You tend to notice it when the roads have improved. All the while you're hobbling around on slush it gets splashed up onto the exhaust but doesn't get hot enough to smell properly.

As soon as the roads are clear enough to give it some beans it starts to burn off.

Not quite burning oil, not quite taring a roof, not quite burring brakes or clutch...sort of smell?

...and yes, some rubber in there too.

The "grit" is a mollases based substance these days, that might be connected. :-/
