Another easy test, if you leave your door open, does the interior light get a fraction brighter as soon as the glow plug light goes out? I would expect it to if the glow plugs are working. (without actually starting engine!)

How was it when it started up last time? did it start straight away? was it running rough for a few seconds?

IIRC, I dont think you can paperclip the 2.5 TD

Why is it that often on TDs the diesel glowplugs/light doesn't come on?

Often when the engine is still too cold to fire immediately, the glowplugs dont come on. Why is this? Presumably something is wearing/broken through age? :-/

This is because the engine is hot enough.
The glowplug is only to help cold vapourised fuel to ignite

Thank you very much for your comments , glow plugs I don't believe, because it use to start really fast when cold , 1 second or 2 , it use to start really well

Still worth checking them though, as the GP relay contacts can sometimes arc up giving intermittent or dirty connection, easy enough to do, will need a meter to check, should be 12volts on the 6 thick wires above the relay,Ing on, dash gp light on the volts will should still be there for about another 5 seconds after the dash light goes out.

You can also diss the top plug feeding the GP above the relay and measure each GP in turn (ohms, GP lead to -12 v) each of the 6 leads should measure between 1 and 2 ohms each, any more than 2 or 3 plugs out then you will have problems starting this weather.

Hi my Omega yesterday worked fine, this morning I could't start the engine, starter runs really fine, but the engine doesn't start, it  seems it does't have  any fuel, the thank is 1/4 full !! any ideas? could it be fuel pump?

Most likely The lift pump.
Turn ignition on and listen at the fuel tank you should here it whirling away.
If your getting white smoke out the back glow plugs at fault

Hi guys, thank you all 4 your comments, the issue was a short circuit in the glow plugs wiring, no current was getting to the glow plugs . Omega is now back to the streets. Next month I'll change water pump, thermostat, belts, aux tensioner, oils ( engine & gearbox) and all filters   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

My guess is that the loom rubbed on the black support plate down the side of the inlet chamber.

Well, I really can't tell, I did made the repair in the official retailer, it looks the wiring wasn´t original anymore, there was a loose wire

Hi guys, thank you all 4 your comments, the issue was a short circuit in the glow plugs wiring, no current was getting to the glow plugs . Omega is now back to the streets. Next month I'll change water pump, thermostat, belts, aux tensioner, oils ( engine & gearbox) and all filters   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

ie: the engine doesnt fire up quickly, as its clearly still too cold, but the car 'thinks' its warm enough to not need glowplugs. Hence 5 seconds of kuh-jerr-jerr-jerr, before it finally starts.

Both my dads and my mates new Elite suffer from this. Normally this issue happens after its had a short run, and been left for a few minutes, then they attempt to start it again. No glowplug light comes on as it 'thinks' its warm enough, but it isnt; hence much starter motor action before finally firing.

I just wondered what causes this.

I don't have an Elite but have never experienced problems like this on my cdx. Are you talking about the BMW engine?
