Timing tensioner query??

Hi everyone, were in the middle of changing the timing belt, now in the haynes manual it states to look for the letter "D" on an original tensioner or "E" if it's a modified tensioner, now my question to everyone is what would happen and which direction would the belt go if it states "01" :question :question  [smiley=undecided.gif] [smiley=rolleyes.gif]there is no letter at all, it just states "01" where the letter should be, it was on the vehicle when we bought it, any thoughts or help would be most welcome, Thank you very much in advance :y

Im not an expert on the subject, but just had a look at the cambelt DVD and markdtm ( who is the experts expert) states that the early tensioner backing plate is marked with E B and the later plate is marked with 01 and the two are not interchangeable. Sounds like you have the later type then, and need to replace like with like. Hope that helps. :y
It may be a bit late now, but I would highly recommend the OOF cambelt DVD, its worth its weight in gold.
There will probably be a few people along later who have changed dozens of v6 belts and may be able to give more specific advice. :y

D and EB are interchangeable

D/EB and 01 are not interchangable.

If your backing plate is the incorrect type, you can swap over the pulleys/tensioner, putting the new pulleys/tensioner on the old backing plate.


In all cases, belt is installed anticlockwise from crank, with tensioner being last bit.

Also, I'm sure you know this, you must use a GM V6 locking/timing kit to do this task. It is not possible otherwise, no matter how good you are. :y

Thanks for that, I have already ordered the DVD earlier yesterday, so should get it Wednesday or Thursday, the tool kit, is it a main dealer supply only :question does anyone know of any mobile mechanics that would do the timing for us :question and does anyone know roughly how much it would cost :question

I only ask as i have recently found out I have all the systoms of brain tumour & have had urgent appointments to go to at the hospital and still have to go to, and with the car being off the road I am struggling to say the least, and I need to get it done asap :( .

The cambelt DVD is well worth the small price it costs.

I got a V6 cam locking set off eBay a couple of months back for £52 delivered. yes, it's a little steep, but so long as the box and the tools remain in good condition you could proberly sell it again on eBay for £40+. Just do an eBay search for Vauxhall / Saab V6 cam locking tools and you should be able to find a couple for sale.

Failing that I reckon that this place should have some in stock; http://franklin-tools.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_FRANKLIN_STOCKISTS_2.html#nw Theres even one in Mersyside, but I've no idea how much it would cost.
