Hi all,

Just bought a 2001 2.6 V6 for my father in law with 65,000 on the clock and full service history, I advised him to have one as I have always been very impressed with the car and had a 51 plate from new a few years ago.

The car drives fine and is all there as you would expect. Only thing I had to do was purchase a new boot due in Z147 (thanks to Darren for the elite he was breaking!) too many dents and a replacement was the best option.

I have noticed a bit of an oily type deposit in the water although the car doesn't loose any oil. Any ideas?

There is also a slight ticking from the engine, it,s only slight and at idling, but I think it's a pulley bearing?

i have been advised to have the cam belt and water pump changed as a matter of course, but I understand this can be an expensive job? Is it possible to tackle the job myself as we are trying to keep the cost down?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of the expense involved comes from paying someone else's labour charges, if you have the necessary skill and tools then it will be cheaper if you can do it your self.
I've not seen it but I believe there is a comprehensive guide available on/via this site that gives step by step instructions on how to do the job. Or you could always try a Haynes manual...

Thanks for the advice so far, I have decided to keep the costs down so have bought the dvd from the shop and got a list of tools from the help area of the forum.

Is about £95 all in inc water pump about right for the cambelt change?

Also where can I get the locking kit from?

I don't know if the kit will work on a 2.6 engine, perhaps someone will be able to tell you, unless they have the hump because you are going to d.i.y......

Mine has the earlier kit, the one I replaced did as well.


So it had multiple adjustable pulleys.

All seems OK though.

All V6 locking kits are the same. 

unless they have the hump because you are going to d.i.y......

No one on here is going to get the hump because your doing it yourself mate, in fact you will be pos encouraged to have a go. The mechanics on here are here to help if you decide that it is beyond your level of spannering or you get into a right 2&8. YOU WILL NEED THE LOCKING KIT TO DO THE JOB but they are quite epensive, but can be borrowed.
Use the dvd for guidence not the haynes man.
If you have a small spotting of oil in the coolant it might be the first signes of oil cooler failure so it would be prudent to do that job at the same time. Also check the cam covers for signs of leaking  and replace if ness using gen gaskets and o rings.
