Although the instant fuel comp will register that mpg, no way will it be the average.

You need to be doing 55mph for it to register 57mpg!
My tractor seems to be most economical around 70mph ish.  And I can read that sort of instantaneous mpg on the flat :y

In the case of my TD Astra, a tank of derv is about £2-50 more than petrol, but it does 45(ish) mpg. Not brilliant I know & I don't know what I'd get from a similar petrol Astra (wife's auto 1600 Astra is crap - 28 mpg around town), but compared to the 3.0 Omega the Astra helps to pay for itself every time I fill it.

But compare the cost of the diesel and petrol Astra....

Often when new the diesel version of a car is more expensive (not always) but in most cases.

Even if its £500 more... would take you quite a bit of miles to get the cost back

That's roughly 5% more. So, assuming an average of 25mpg from a petrol engine, you would only need an improvement of 1.25mpg to start saving money.  :y

Going on those figures then, 5p = 1.25mpg.

When i started driving petrol was 70p a litre, so its now 35p more than when i started...

So 35p divded by 5 = 7...

So

7 x 1.25mpg = 8.75mpg.

So i have basically lost 9mpg since i started driving. So gone from 30mpg to 21mpg.....

I know people keep banging on about petrol price, but 35p in 6 years is not bad!

Before I came to my senses and got another Omega I had a new shape Laguna 1.9DCI 6 speed, actually I would still have it but someone waved a wad of readies at me and I sold it, I could get from home ( Chester-le-street, Co. Durham ) to Orleans, SW of Paris, 612 miles on a full tank of derv, driving carefully through the night. These new common rail diesels are amazing on fuel but a nightmare if they go wrong - each injector coded to ecu etc. Still like the extra comfort and solid feeling of the Omega though.

Not quite. If diesel is 5% more expensive than petrol you need to be more than 5% more fuel efficient to save money on diesel.

A 5% improvement on 25mpg is 1.25mpg.

On your figures, fuel has risen by 50% in six years. You seem to be mixing, MPG, pence per litre, pence per mile and pence per gallon in the same equation. I don't think that your figures equate to what you are trying to work out.  :y

Just on the work commute, I am getting over 50% more economy over MV6, and its around 3.5% more expensive.  Both have same service schedule, though tractor does take 1l more oil, and a more expensive filter.

Now, my petrol fuel bill for 2006 (2007 is too complex due to lack of MV6 use) worked out at £300 per month, when fuel was nearer 90ppl.

Now I can't be arsed to do the maths, as the Stellas are slipping down nicely, but it pays for the extra insurance/tax/mot costs, and still returns a tidy profit ;)
