Running on 5 for a day
« on: 10 July 2011, 20:29:18 »

My MV6 started running on 5 cylinders yesterday but is now back to running on 6 which is a bit wierd.
Done the the paperclip test and got code 73 and 19.
I`ve had code 73 for a couple of weeks now anyway which is the MAF sensor (again) but code 19 is incorrect RPM signal, does this indicate a failing crank sensor?
I can`t understand why it would start running on 6 again for no reason  :-?

probably the cleaner air on your trip to the Red Rose side of the Pennines!  ::)  ::)  ::)  ::)

Can clear your code 19 and then see what happens?  19 is generally as you say ie a dying crank sensor, they're about £50 & a worth while spare for your boot.  :y

Ha ha, it was chucking it down over there, much better, dryer air on the right side of the Pennines  ;)

the 73 could well be a red herring caused by your failing crank sensor...if its failing it could well be stop start for a while...misfire is a potential symptom of failing crank sensor...its will all get worse and die...could do it while you are doing 90...erm 70 or a motorway so I would get it sorted now :y

I checked the codes a couple of weeks ago after another bout of stalling and it threw up 74 again, already replaced the MAF sensor once so I`m leaving it until I`ve got the breathers cleaned and cam cover gaskets done. I`m fairly sure it`s a genuine code and not a red herring, only got 19 when I checked today when I got home but by that time it was back on all 6.
Thanks for the replies  :y

when my crank sensor went it kept on cutting out whenever you came to a stop and normally had to wait 5 mins to be able to restart. be careful when getting a replacement, there are two types, square and rectangular plug and get a genuine vx one :y hth

Right, new crank sensor hasn`t stopped it missing but as it`s an intermittent problem it`s proving to be a PITA.
The problem only seems to appear when the engine is warm and as it`s only missing on one cylinder it can`t be the DIS pack, leaving the plugs and leads.
I changed the plugs tonight and took it for a damned good thrash to get it nice and warm and then tried some uphill 4th and 5th gear acceleration from around 1000 RPM, low speed, low revs and high load to try and force it to start missing on one cylinder. Everything seems ok so far but I`ll see what happens tomorrow, I hate intermittent problems cos you think it`s fixed and then it rears it`s ugly head again  >:(
One thing that really concerns me is that the front left plug hole had some water in with the oil, most plug holes had some degree of oil in but only this one had some water in too.
I haven`t had to put any water in since I bought it but it concerns me that there is water there. No mayo on the filler cap either so I don`t know why I`d get some water contamination in only one plug hole.

Occasionally a failing dispack can cause misfire on just one plug...but its not normal so I wouldn't go changing any parts just yet...if you have a spare however then its worth swapping it over to see :y

But it seems likely the water in one plug may be your culprit...could be from the scuttle leaking rain through?? This would also be leaking onto your dispack too more than likely and will cause it to fail if its not now...so check the spongy stuff under the scuttle to see if its wet...if its this then the scuttle needs some sealant on it to seal it up :y

The scuttle is dry and the plug hole with water contamination was the front left which is away from the scuttle panel so it all seems a little strange.
It`s been running on all six so far so it seems the water contamination was the culprit, just got to find the cause now.

Was the water coolant or 'fresh' water?  :-/

I have a similar problem. Just changed the plugs and found that one of the plug wells has clearly had water in it.

Its the front cylinder, passenger side.

The top of the spark plug was very rusty and there is rust residue on the outside of the plug lead for about 2 to 3 inches from the bottom. The nearest water source is possibly the thermostat or perhaps the coolant pipe that connects to the right (from the front) of the plenum and which runs alonside the plenum towards the back of the engine bay passing across the top of the passenger side cam cover.

However, there was no actual water present just clear signs that there has been a significant amount in the plug well at some time. I expect that this water has caused damage to the plug lead ( the new plugs didn't cure it )and hence my misfire.

I don`t know Andy, I tried some intense interrogation but it wouldn`t let on  ;D
There wasn`t enough to be able to tell, just evidence that water had mixed with the oil at some point.

You didn't taste it then  ::) The old type antifreeze is sweet to taste - poisonous if you drink too much  ;) - and the pink stuff tastes absolutely foul! :o :o

Thats exactly the same as mine Alex although the plug leads were fine on mine and the change of plugs seemed to have worked for now.
I`ll have a closer look when I do the breather box and cam cover gaskets.
