Auxiliary electric waterpump, MV6 -95
« on: 17 September 2011, 09:57:41 »

Hello
I have reason to think that the irregular engine temp (that my engine suffers from) has something to do with the auxiliary waterpump.
I'm talking about the electricpump on the radiator.
I've heard from a mechanic that its purpose is to circulate water in the radiator, to help the mechanical pump.
And if it brokes it could affect engine temp...
When I tested the current to the pump it was only about 0,2 volt! That was with the engine running, a warm engine.
So what tells the pump to run, is it controlled by watertemp or should it run all of the time?
Where should I search the reason for error??
I've tested the pump, it runs when you give it current directly from the battery.

The auxiliary pump can only run when the engine is stopped. Its' purpose is to circulate a little coolant after the engine has been stopped when hot, to prevent "after-boiling", so I don't think it has a bearing on your problem, I'm afraid.

What exactly are your engine temp problems? I had no problems with engine temp until we bought a caravan. The engine temp climbed to the red up a particularly long local hill. Rad flush didn't make much difference but a new rad solved the problem completely, even towing in 30+ deg in France un & down their long long autoroute hills.

you could have 15+ yrs of cr4p in your rad.  :-/

No I dont think its the thermostat, thats been changed recently. As for the headgasket.
I changed the headgasket last autumn because I had big trouble with the engine temp.
The temp was fine during winter, but this summer its the same thing with the engine temp???????? Why?
I thought it could have something with the auxiliary pump...

Do you have (access to) an infra red type thermometer? It might help to 'see' any parts of your rad that might be silted up.  :-/ :-/

No I dont think I could get my hands on a infrared thermometer.
But the radiator is almost the only thing I havent changed yet...
And since it did work during winter?? Maybe I should change it...
I thought that maybe one of the cylinder heads was cracked? So that pressure from the engine leaked into the water. Messing with the flow of the water.
I've tested the compression, and it was roughly the same on all the cylinders.
I think I'd rather buy a radiator than "dig" my way down to the cylinder heads again  :(

A good flush won't do any harm first, & is a lot easier to do.  :y

Forte have a good reputation  ;) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Forte-Car-Cooling-Coolant-System-Flush-500ml-New-/140537366018?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20b8ae0602

That pump gives you heat inside without the engine running. Short stops, like waiting for  the mrs at shops

Different pump, and not all have it fitted - mine doesn't.  :y :y You're talking about a pump under the cruise gubbins, OP is talking about the pump next to the top of the main radiator.  ;) ;)

Hi, I would try at first an inside cleaning of cooling system. Pipes, cooler, rad. All. ;)

Hello...again

This weekend I've changed the radiator. Before, with the old one, a fan and the auxiliary pump always started running after I've turned the car off.
But now with the new radiator It never starts...  So, Is this normal behaviour?
Should the auxiliary pump only start when the engine is really hot and you turn the car off??

Yes, that's the only time it should run.

Is the temperature staying OK now?

The temperature is more stable now. And it was so even before, with the old radiator. I think that had something to do with the colder temperature now in autumn.
The old radiator probably was a bit clooged so during hot summer it got to hot.
Guess I'll see next summer if it works better with the new radiator...

Thanks for all help you guys.
