it lasted 1 power cycle - next time I turned on the ignition it went back to 'phone'. Arschh.

Reckon taking out the stereo and puling out the TM adapter might help the situ? Is there such a thing or is it hardwired? Could really use my stereo, I'm DJing in London sat night, can't have no sounds for the journey!

Saying that there's my gf's brand spanking red Astra Sport hatch with VXR bodykit on outside with 99 miles on the clock, its looking favourite at the mo...want to take ma miggy though!

I would remove the cover from above the drivers foot well, find the traffic master module and unplug it here....

The TM unit intercepts the mute wire for itself, but also honours it for other devices, so possible there is an old kit been cut out and wires not insulated properly.  Removing the TM unit breaks this chain, so is a good place to start.

If you don't use TM, you may be able to remove the TM loom which should give a bit more room behind stereo - they are often a short 'extension lead' that plugs into car loom and to radio, though this means removing radio cage.
