Wiring HID lights to pre-facelift pre-xenon loom
« on: 07 October 2008, 17:45:32 »

Curtesy of the gentleman that is iLoveMyElite I'm soon to be the proud owner of a set of HID headlamps for my pre-facelift old girl.

I'd like to ask, other than the headlamp washer arrangement and the levelling sensors on the suspension arms what wiring will I need to connect up to get them to work?

I'm going to scrutinise the wiring diagrams, as the new FAI front wishbones I have can accept the level sensor - however, it's not first on my list of priorities.

To get the headlights to work you plug them in, will have full beam and sidelights...to get the HID bulbs working, you just need to connect the yellow and brown wires on the HID's to the exisiting yellow and brown wires on the current loom (pretty sure I'm right)

Right, today I received my headlamps.

One question....

I can't see any ballast packs on them, is this internal?

How does one tell the difference?

(OH, the glass has come up a treat, so may post a how-to if anyone is interested!)

The ballast packs are external...very obvious silver boxes bolted on to the bottom of the headlights by a black bracket...

Rather essential to these lights and the plug for the HID bulb runs out of the ballast pack too...

Does it have the HID bulb in?? Might be worth getting a pic up of the back of the unit...

Right here are the pictures of the front and the underside:

front:

Underside:

Bearing in mind that on the original sale picture on this forum it advertised them as ELITE HID Xenon headlamps.

If they are just projectors it's my fault for not asking the right questions to start with I suppose.

look like the standard projector units to me.. not hard to convert though
unless the 3/4 rails with two bolt holes/ screwholes at the very front is for the ballast pack which has been taken off for some reason?

Not legally it can't - the projector lenses haven't been certified for HID use. Thats ignoring the washers and levelling.

I disagree...if the post specifically says they are HID and these are projector headlights then the post is wrong and what you have is not what was advertised...HID stands for High Intensity Gas Discharge namely the bulbs themselves...and projectors arent HID's...

Trouble is a lot of folks think ALL projectors are HID ... don't know/understand the difference as externally they look the same .. :(

So could be a genuine error rather than mis-selling .. but then again could be someone "trying it on" .. the reaction to sending them back for a refund will soon tell you ..

Totally agree...most likely a genuine error on behalf of the seller and tbh I'm sure this will be the case for I Love My Elite as he seems like a very genuine guy...also (assuming the lights came off the car he stripped) it was a 98 elite and should have had HID's...

Here Was the advert thread... I'd based the purchase on the second one down.

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1219863570

and the header dies read:
Xenons/HIDS including all the bits that go with em

i'll get a photo of the back of the headlamps and post it up.

Sorry to sound a little pissed about this, but I turned down a set of projectors at half the proce from another member on here who i've bought from before on the basis that these were HID's.  :(

There standard projectors, you can tell by the rubber covers and level motor which are just visable in the picture

Thanks Mark, I feared as much.

Here's the view from behind in any case...
