Electrical burning
« on: 25 November 2008, 17:40:36 »

On my way home from work i experienced a burning plastic smell and some smoke arising from the footwell and the drivers side vent, i pulled over and turned everything off, thiking the last thing i turned on was the Heated rear window i pulled the fuse out for that and the climate control and anything heated  ;D got home with no further issues, i got the fuse panel partially out to have a look and there doesnt appear to be any wires anywhere that look as if they have been burning, and for some reason the smell of burning only seems to be localised around the headlight switch  :-? and the surrounding vent, then whilst i was thinking about it i remembered i had turned them off and then on again when i came out of work (dockyard)

Is there a chance it could be the headlight switch ?  :-/ :-/

Circuit tracks on PCB`s, faulty switches, and trapped wires can all give an amazing amount of burning smells and smoke that can also travel a fair distance making tracking it down quite difficult.

I would strongly advise against driving the car before its diagnosed and repaired for obvious reasons.

However, fire extinguisher, spanner for the battery terminals and a container that can spray water at the ready, try all of the electrical switches, gadgets and lights in the car until you find something that doesn`t work as a result of a possible burnt track and start from there.

Have you done any work on the car recently? Any trapped wires? (Always a favourite !! )

Right its not the heater blower as i originally thought, plugged the fuse back in for it and no smoke, so this leaves me with the heated rear window which is the last thing i remember turning on before the smoke started  >:(

One of my buddy's who also drives, tada a Omega  :). It was modified to use front foglights as Day Running Light.
He had a similar expirence like ours.
The modification included diodes in the wiring, that was placed a bit behind the fucebox.
I think the problem was that the diodes from the begining wasn't powerfull enough, so they used two or three less powerfull diodes.

ps. you can see my friend's Omega MV6 here
