Rep points
« on: 10 February 2008, 10:03:28 »

Has anyone ever thought about rep points? for example, if somebody gives you a good piece of advice, or helps you out? you give them a rep?

maybe make the number of reps you get mount up to stars, instead of just by the post count?

Not sure about others, but I would sooner put into action a piece of advice given by a senior member than a newbie, because i dont know why but it gives me the feeling they know what they are talking about.

But people that know little about omegas can stell become senior member just by posting about a load of rubbish!

If there was a rep system, it would show that they have given good advice before, so if you do something they say,l then its likely to work?

The site is very very good, just thought i'd throw in an idea (wether its good/bad or wont work) see what people think!

Not easily implementable with the software we use.

Also, I'm slighty against the idea, as it makes one person's views/advice appear more important than that of others.   :-/

We are considering implementing something not dissimilar for traders though.

Personally I'm against such a scheme, this is a friendly forum, any such "system" can lead to competition/back biting/false accusations etc etc...:(

One persons idea of "good advice" can be very different to anothers.. and  at worst, it could stop folks posting opinions...  :(

We have this on a other forum I use often, TBH as good as a idea it is it rarely gets used as it should and as such gets ignored and forgot about.

The only time it gets brought up is when some one asks me to boost there rep, due to some bug since I stopped been a mod on there when I boost some ones rep it takes them stright to the max rep points.

at the end of the days its down to the person reading the advice wether they choose to trust it or not, so i dont see this being a problem.

your right though, but it just popped into my head & thought i'd suggest it see what peoples reactions are. seems most are against so far!

All suggestions are welcome, and are read, and are considered. Few ever get implemented for a variety of reasons, usually because it doesn't sit comfortably with what we are trying to achieve here.

I believe we are enough of a community here to be able to judge for ourselves what somebody's area of expertise is - something that reputation marks are not able to distinguish...

We had a thing like this on audi-sport, you could thank some one for their post and could see how many times they had been thanked next to their post count. To be honest I agree with TheBoy, and it got out of hand, people thanked others for pointless things so it became meaningless anyway.

To be honest this is the only forum I have entered into, and it's great.  :y :y :y
There are many member willing to give advice or suggestions, they are of their opinions or experience, however with any problem you will get many replies, so  judge for yourself how useful, surly if several members say much the same thing then this must be good advice. Whilst not yet specifically tested I feel, with what I have learned, any advice is honest,  freely given and can be trusted. No one has anything to gain by being anything other, and you get to know the regulars.
If anything threaten any member with poor advice with a reduction in their post count, this seems to be so important and a way of controlling any deviants on the site.  :D :D :D

Another site I frequest has a 'Brownie Point' system as you describe over and above the stars employed here.

Whilst initially worthy, it soon degenerated into a relatively meaningless add on due to posters adding and subtracting points with no regard to their import.  End result was a total fustercluck......
