ABS traction control lights
« on: 04 August 2009, 17:20:47 »

Hope you guys can help.
The lights for the traction control and the ABS come on after driving a couple of miles also the speedo drops down to zero. Any ideas what this could be?
Its on a Omega 2.5 CDX auto.

It appears we're having a spate of failed/failing ABS ECU's .....  :'(

Mine did this for an afternoon abut 5 years ago & then fixed itself ..... ( do we have a fingers crossed Smiley?  ;D)

Yes...both lights came on and then speedo died..also steering went heavier than normal..after a while driving speedo would jump up to speed and then die again.Parked up for several hours and when returned and restarted after a few miles all lights back on and dead speedo again...strange thing though it did all return to normal after a few miles again so looks like it is dying ..not yet dead...looks like the abs ecu which is faulty

Have a look HERE on how to remove it. Either get one from an identical model from one of the breakers on here or send it off to get it fixed (around £100 IIRC) :y

Would it have to be off a 2.5 CDX or would any 2.5 do?

Any 2.5 of the same year, same gearbox and wheel size  ::) And yes they are a pain in the ass to change. The company that fix them is called BBS Reman.

On reading several threads and Kevin,s detailed description of removing the ABS ecu from the module,is it not easier to remove the entire abs unit with the ecu attached and then replace in total(assuming you could buy a second hand unit and get the ecu refurbished)..seems then the only bits to remove are the plugs for electrics/brake feeds which are on the top and any mountin bolts for module...or is ther even less space and lots more needs to be removed ?

I'd say replacing just the ECU is much easier.

You have to contend with 6 bolts that are pretty fiddly to remove but on the plus side, you don't need to disturb the hydraulic system at all (ABS ECU can only be properly bled using a Tech 2). Not sure if it's any easier to get to the bolts that hold the valve body in either, and you'd probably have to do more dismantling to get the whole valve body out as it's larger.
