DAB aerial
« on: 23 August 2009, 13:28:33 »

I know this has had several previous posts but would just like a bit more info.
In an effort to improve the sound quality of DAB via a Highway unit it is suggested that an external aerial is used in place of the stick on glass jobbie that comes with the unit.
My car currently has a little black stubby roof mount in the center of the roof above rear screen which I assume is for the traffic master and in car phone. As my stereo does not support a phone and I do not use traffic master ,would it just be a case of replacing that aerial  with a DAB compatible and running the cable from that to the Highway unit ?,or is the aerial for any other purpose.
Did have a thought about fitting a DAB aerial in the center of the roof at the front above interior light and that way the cable is an easier run and shorter route.
Suppose simlest would be the "magnetic mount ",but it looks like a minicab unit and you then have the cable running through door seals and no doubt the low-lives would end up pinching the unit.
Any comments would be appriciated.

Traffic master uses a wire antenna under the dash, IMHO. The little stub will be just for a phone if you don't have sat nav built-in.

If you get an antenna with a "euro" style base it may well just screw in where the phone stub unscrews. The coaxial cable from this antenna runs down the driver's side rear pillar, under the back seat and up under the sill trim panels on the driver's side to behind the kick panel.

Failing that, it's straightforward to remove the base as well, Just need to remove the interior trim panel that runs across the rear of the roof above the rear seat and it can simply be disconnected and unscrewed. IIRC this leaves a hole about 18mm diameter in the bodywork.

Thanks Kevin...don,t suppose I could use the existing coax from the existing aerial to the kick panel and then just add an extention to the Highway unit?

Could do, but it's got a wierd connector behind the kick plate. Might be easier to pull another wire through.

Just wanted to post up my results on a search for a good DAB external aerial.
I have now fitted a JVC..Hal 3 dab external aerial,which I bought from fleabay.
I removed the existing stub aerial from the roof rear, and using the existing hole fitted the new unit and feed the cable through headlining/down door pilar and along cill trim, then via a coupling flylead into the Highway unit.
To say the result is staggering is an understatement..reception is now 100% on every drive I have had over the last couple of days and it is a real pleasure to be able to listen to Planet Rock without any signal loss.
This is definitly the way to go and at a cost of £30=00 all in a real bargain.
Thanks to all for advise.

Thanks,Kevin.

Only real issue was roof hole was 18mm,and aerial spigot was 10.5mm so required a bit of improvising,to make it watertight(I hope !!!)

All standard Elite spec..Bose system as original.I didn,t want to retro the interior so just added the Pure Highway and endured dubious sound quality for several months with just the stick - on type screen aerial.
Since the new JVC Hal 3 is in place on the roof the sound is quite stunning...worth every penny...and more...thanks for interest.
